Parking Fees

Why did I have to pay $12 to park at City College Sunday even though I have a SBCC parking permit?

I'd suspect it had something to do with Sunday not being a school day.

You did not have to pay anything..You decided to pay 12 bucks instead of finding a parking space further away.

Special event - fireworks fund raiser perhaps? Was their a sign explaining this or what did the ticket taker tell you.

Your parking permit is for school hours/days use.

Seriously? Because the fireworks were put on by the City and Sparkle, not SBCC. The parking money probably helps offset the cost of the fireworks, which can be very expensive. I can't believe this isn't perfectly obvious. It's not the end of the world to A) get some exercise by walking a little further from a free parking site, and B) appreciate the fact that your city even has fireworks in this economy and your measly $12 might help offset a show that brings so much joy to so many people. You can't always get something for nothing.

I'd be very suprised if the money went to the City to help with the cost of fireworks.

I'll bet this was a fundraiser for SBCC.

SBCC always gets high use during the fireworks because it is a great place to see them. Spectacular in fact. Parking fees would be a way to offset the extra costs to keep folks from trampling the horticulture gardens, litter, extra security patrols, and general protection of the place from large crowds.

I don't think so. I think the city via the Waterfront Department — that now has to pay for the fireworks because of a demand made by the Parks and the City Council last year — works with SBCC and, in effect, rents their parking lots for weekend overflow. ...Anyone know for sure?

You can send an appeal to the president of the SBCC. Appeal your ticket, explaining the circumstances. CC the director of parking services.

Interesting. We only paid $10 to park at SBCC.

Indeed, why did one have to pay $12 and others only $10. What is going on here.

I heard a story last year about some person setting up a tabel & chair at the entrance of a small parking lot in Los Angeles and collected money to park there. He did this for many years and when he "retired", they realized that wasn't a parking lot that charged a fee !!!! They never caught the guy and had NO info on him. Didn't even know his name !!!

I'm pretty sure the SBCC parking pass is for parking during class hours. If there are no classes then you can certainly park there, I'm sure, without getting technically caught. But if there's a special event and they are charging for parking and you're not going to class, then by all means, they have the right to charge you.

I found this on the SBCC website.

link

It clearly states the hours the parking permit is valid. If you were there with the proper permit (i.e., the summer term permit) during the hours they list here and not outside of them at all, then I'd ask the parking office on Tuesday why you had to pay.

But the permit isn't a 24 hour free pass to park in any lot whenever you want.

The lot on the top of the east campus facing the ocean (at the top of La Playa Stadium) closest to where one would see the fireworks is not a student lot, where a student parking pass would be valid.

Maybe that was the problem. Were all the SBCC lots off limits and charging fees, or just this one that is reserved for staff and faculty during class hours.

The city through the waterfront owns the lots down by the track and leases them to Sbcc during the year through a joint use agreement. The waterfront department has control of those lots during the summer. That is why the sbcc permit was not valid during that special event and also not valid at leadbetter or harbor west lot during the summer. When the harbor trailer lot fills you may see boat trailers parking there as an overflow lot. In regards to the different prices the $10 dollar fee was a different lot owned by sbcc next to the gym.
