Surprise Waterfalls
updated: Feb 09, 2010, 6:42 AM

By John Wiley

Santa Barbara County is overflowing with diverse and magnificent waterfalls. Many have a Norwegian look, some could be in Arizona, and plenty are somewhere in between. Monday mid-day looked clear enough, but we thought all the water from recent storms would have drained off the upper slopes of our mountains. We flew a couple of miles North of the airport to have a look at the beautiful series of pools and small falls under the powerlines, and were delighted to find plenty of water. Turning toward Gaviota we saw falls and pools still running in most canyons. We decided to fly back along the North side of the ridge and found some absolutely stunning falls, that were shaded so they looked much better than the photos. We also got a shot of the distant snow peeking out below the clouds. Crossing back to the South side we continued up above Montecito and found more falls. Of the dozen or so best pix, here's a selection and I'll put a few larger ones on my Photo Page. Shall I post some more?

I don't know which of these picture are of the waterfall you can see if you are going over the freeway on Glen Annie towards Cathedral Oaks/Glen Annie. Can you tell me which one? I've been seeing it every winter for many, many years & love it after it rains hard. I named it after me & my close friends refer to it as ___ falls, because I love to see it. I always tell my friends to look for it. I checked it out and it was really flowing. Thanks for awesome photos!
