Election night report from City Hall
updated: Nov 03, 2009, 8:46 PM

by Edhat staff

The Edhat staff came down to City Hall to check out how things are shaping up in the city of Santa Barbara's first ever vote-by-mail-only election. We learned earlier this evening from city staff that there would be two rounds of returns tonight.

When we arrived at City Hall at 8 p.m., the atmosphere was convivial. Many of the candidates, their volunteers and staff are here and everyone was anxiously awaiting for the first round of results. Things really filled up in the city hall chambers, where the votes are actually being counted, just after 8 p.m. A few last voters were trickling out downstairs as the reporters and spectators wandered in. City officials estimated there will be at least 21,000 votes in this election, a big increase in turnout from 2 years ago.

The earliest available returns, which show voter tallies through Nov. 2, are:

FOR MAYOR
Schneider 7706
Francisco 6278
Cushman 2755
Hansen 320
Garrett 365

FOR COUNCIL

Tevis 2020
Cruz 1400
Gibbs 1492

Raisin 638

MEASURE B

Voter turnout: Ballots counted to date: 17,802. Citywide registration: 46,718.
