Elephant seals in Cambria

Here's the deal. While wandering around the Cambria area recently, I pulled off the road at the Piedras Blancas seal rookery on Highway 1, not far from Hearst's Castle in San Simeon. Got to talking with one of the elephant seal docents and learned a ton of good information about the elephant seals, their migratory habits, mating and birthing habits and a wealth of other information. (Go to elephantseal.org for all the details). The big news is that the alpha males are coming, the alpha males are coming!! They'll be on the beach in December to establish beach dominance. From December through March they'll be breeding and according to the attractive elephant seal docent I spoke with, is something you don't want to miss, if you know what she means. The males rarely fight to the death, but broken jaws and blinded eyes are not unheard of, for you testosterone filled fight junkies. All this for the love of a big fat female.
Below are pictures of some juvenile males and females who will take back to the ocean and migrate north before the big boys and girls arrive in December. If you get the chance and have the time, take the 3 hour drive north and catch some of the action.
Destination cost: A tank of gas. Ringside seats: $0.00. Tacos at El Chorlito Mexican Restaurant afterwards: $12.00 Overall experience: Priceless.
It should be interesting. Look for me there.
Life is magical.
