From the looks of things I think some people are not satisfied with the work of the police in Santa Barbara after the Wednesday afternoon attacks on the Eastside. Since then they have been scrambling around trying to find the suspects involved. It was just about the exact time I turned my scanner on to write reports I had done a couple earlier and turned it on at well it says here 3:45 P.M. And heard “injury traffic accident vehicle into bicyclist,” Carpinteria and Soledad. My friend who was sitting not too far away heard it and said it sounds more like some type of assault.
I said "It's a vehicle into a bicyclist." But he insisted "It's gang territory, it's late afternoon, I'm going with assault." And so he might be right. The call seemed strange to me because rightaway the police bought up the question of an assault also, I didn't know what to think. I had only written down two calls earlier in the day about midmorning there was a man at Casa Esperanza that the police were looking for in questioning for a case of a sexual nature he showed up at Casa and pretty soon figured out that the police were on the way so he left but they got him a block away, then at 11 A.M. There was a bicycle/ vehicle accident at Carrillo and San Andreas, since it was in a better part of town it was determined to be a real accident.
Well it wasn't too long after that I heard something about a kid in the barber shop with a gash in his head over at Bond and Nopal. I never heard the police say 187 which is California Penal Code for Murder, or 1144 for dead body, but they hardly ever use those terms over the radio anymore because they don't want people in some towns like ours know that we have "real crime." I did hear them say "245" which is assault with a deadly weapon, and request some of the "heavyweights" in the department, barricades, tape, and the Crime Lab people. I heard someone say "Take all his clothing in one bag don't mix it up with anyone else’s clothing that might be involved." And while the police were speaking about some personal details about the victim someone else was keying the mike so it wasn't totally clear on the scanner, I pretty much figured someone had died the way they were talking. After the incident the officer in charge asked dispatch to send them out on emergency calls only because they needed all the police they could get on the Eastside.
Wednesay evening in the 1600 block of Castillo there was a domestic violence call, at Santa Barbara City College there was a subject who brandished a knife. Later on in the Evening when everything went back to abnormal I listened awhile longer. There was a hit and run in the 200 block of North Alisos, a code 40 Drunk down in the gutter in front of the Falldown Hotel, 800 East Cabrillo there was one in custody for what I do not know. In the 3900 block of Via De Diego there was a request to Station 4 for a lift assist from AMR. There was a check the welfare of a 5150 who keeps calling 911 in the 1900 block of Chino, an audible alarm at a Bank of America somewhere, a report of white smoke coming from a building in the Riven Rock area of Montecito.
On Thursday there was a injury traffic accident between a vehicle and a bicycle in the 900 block of De La Vina, a purse snatch suspect seen in the 400 block of North Milpas. (He was suspected in a purse theft the week before.) There was a medical call for a Diabetic problem at the Franklin Clinic in the 1100 block of East Montecito, there was a check the welfare of an older person not seen for a couple days that lives on the Mesa. There were a lot of police officers patrolling areas where gang types hang out, and they conducted many traffic stops checking many people for "Wants and Warrents" A couple I heard one had thousands of dollars in warrants, another was a mistaken identity "Wanted for 187" But it was the wrong guy.
Later in the Afternoon there was a 12 year old kid with a broken arm and difficulty breathing at La Colina School in the 4000 block of Foothill, a 50 year old feeling faint at the Amtrak Station 209 State Street, at around 5 P.M. There was a code 40 trying to start fights with people on Castillo, I heard a lot of sirens on the East side at this time most of which were traffic stops, one officer in the 700 block of East Cabrillo request another officer. I observed two police officers in my neighborhood stop a parole cuff him question him, and let him go so it's not like the police are sitting around drinking coffee and eating donuts I wish I had a bag of donuts right now.
At around 8:20 P.M. at the CVS Pharmacy 1109 State Street there was a disturbance involving an elderly woman the dispatcher actually stated she was an "Elderly 50 year old woman." I'm in my 50's and I'm not elderly yet. I call myself "Old fa*t " but that's me it's O.K. I wonder how old that dispatcher is to have said that he's younger than I thought. There was some possible underage drinking going on in the 900 block of Bath Street, there was a weird call involving Monte Vista School, at 730 North Hope I think it might have been an illegal camper but I'm not sure. There were two guys and a gal trying car doors in the Bath and Los Olivos area, a couple aggressive panhandlers at the Habit 216 South Milpas, a hit and run in the 1000 block of Chapala I think the police got their people in the 1000 block of De La Vina, there was a 459 burglar alarm going off at Sansum Clinic, then a smoke investigation inside an apartment in the 600 block of East Anapamu they sent the troops in case it was a structure fire but someone left the oven on only one engine was needed.
There was a report of an injury traffic accident North of Salinas on 101 but it turned out everyone was O.K. In the 2400 block of Fletcher two guys were yelling at each other, I heard a cop cut in and say he was "En route to jail with three." From where he got them I do not know probably a traffic stop or a "Wants and Warrants" check everything was code 4 no assistance needed on Fletcher but there were suspicious circumstances on West Ortega: "Women selling cookies." They better have some milk too or they are going to jail. Not too long after that someone wanted an ambulance there, the cookies were not that good. Someone called 911 from Rays Liquor and hung up and the last call of the evening was about a man in a wheelchair at Garden and Cabrillo yelling from a wheelchair. Let’s hope it stays mellow this weekend. Be Safe, watch out for Drunk Drivers, and read Edhat before the Independent. See ya Monday, Roger
