What: Open House at the Old Mission La Huerta Project

Who: Open to ALL individuals and groups

Enjoy a rare treat to visit Santa Barbara’s original SUSTAINABLE Spanish Garden. See examples of food, herbs and fibers used 200 years ago in a re-imagined living plant museum.

La Huerta Project volunteers & Old Mission Santa Barbara Docents will take visitors on tours of the Old Mission La Huerta Project as Santa Barbara celebrates Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009. Come learn in an enjoyable setting that portrays Santa Barbara’s first sustainable community garden. Old Mission La Huerta Project was founded in 2003.

The tour will include viewing the Old Mission's living museum, a plant zoo that displays the first Heirloom, Heritage, Historic & Indigenous plants of Spanish Alta California (1769-1834). Project Master Plant List available upon request from professorsortomme@hotmail.com, A self-guided tour of the Mission's Stations of the Cross & Mission Olive Grove is included.

Join the volunteers and docents at the Old Mission La Huerta Project on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22 any time between 10:00 and 1:00. This Open House event is easily accessible. Free parking is available to the public at the Old Mission, enter from Los Olivos and Laguna Streets. Disabled access is available nearer the garden in the restricted lot. Contact Tina Foss or Jerry about accessing this lot. Enter the front of the Old Mission and park in the large lot. Walk toward the lower open field and enter thru the two adobe columns entrance. Stroll along the paths of the Stations of the Cross and Olive Grove and enter the La Huerta Project on the west side.

There will some casual tours or you can self-tour the orchard-garden and the overlook landscape of La Huerta. Garden volunteers and docents will be in the garden from 10:00 to 1:00 on April 22.
