Hats Off - Hats Off: What we did count this year, and in 2004, 2006, and 2007 was the number of Santa hats in the parade. In what proves to be the toughest (and highest) count of the year, we tallied 1088 red hats with pom-poms and white brims.

Horse Count 2008 - Horse Count 2008: There was a lot of horsing around at the Fiesta Parade this year. People were cracking confetti eggs on each other's heads, spectators were wearing ridiculous sombreros, and the dedicated staff of edhat.com was counting the number of horses walking up State Street during the parade.

Reusable Bags - Reusable Bags: We sat on a not-so-sturdy bench in front of reusable bag central, otherwise known as Trader Joes. We watched shoppers leave the store and noted whether or not their newly purchased groceries were being toted home in new brown bags fresh from the market, or veteran reusable bags signed up for another call of duty.

Surrey Survey - Surrey Survey: One reason that the dedicated staff of edhat.com went to the beach yesterday to count surreys was that we wanted to write an article called, "Surrey Survey". The only difference between these two words is R and V, and we saw some of those (RV's) parked down at the beach as well. Surely you must surmise that we were sorry to have surveyed the surreys by the seashore without Suzie.

Illegal Cell Phone Drivers - Illegal Cell Phone Drivers: Last week we found 4.6% of drivers calling hands-not-free. Yesterday we did the same experiment. The only difference this time was the new law. Let us be the first to tell you that, drivers are obeying the law, and cell phone driving has gone down dramatically.

Last Calls - Last Calls: As you probably know, from today and into the future it's against the law to drive while holding a cell phone up to your ear. To honor the last day of cellular mobile freedom, the dedicated staff of edhat.com did one last count of last minute callers. We sat on our favorite wall at the Four Corners intersection, and watched 500 drivers driving 500 cars.

Drum Count 2008 - Drum Count 2008: The Solstice Parade was hot! Not because any risqué behavior, touchy political commentary, or outrageous costumes were pushing the limits of conventionality. It was hot because the temperatures were pushing triple digits on the thermometer. The whole State has been suffering from a short interval of regional warming. This weekend, shade was king, and liquids were in demand.

Spaces Available - Spaces Available: If you're looking for a public display of numbers, there is no better place in town to go than the Granada Garage. Lit up like centerfield at Dodger Stadium, the scoreboards at the two entrances show up-to-the-minute estimates of the number of spaces available on each of the six parking levels.

Luckily for Ed and the gang, two fine, upstanding citizens of Santa Barbara stepped up to the dog dish, and counted in our place.

Laker Flags - Laker Flags: I don't know why I dislike them so much. You can see them a mile away, flitting in the breeze of the moving car like the ribbons on a little girl's pigtails, or the pom-poms of the cheerleaders at the high school football game. They are perky and bright and happy and they look like they're foreign ambassadors or the president or a parade.

Out Of State Plates - Out Of State Plates: This is the fifth year that the dedicated staff of edhat.com has drove through local parking lots near and far on the lookout for out-of-state license plates. We don't know why - maybe a shift in the tectonic plates is drawing Santa Barbara further away from the rest of the country - but every year we spend more time finding fewer license plates.

I Madonnari Element Count - I Madonnari Element Count: Last weekend, artists covered the parking lot at the Mission with chalk, sweat, and birds. It was the I Madonnari Festival - one of the things that make each Memorial Day Weekend memorable. Every year since Edhat has been around, the dedicated staff of edhat.com has gone to the Mission to inspect the chalk paintings for certain key elements and tally them up with tally counters.
