Time To Shop - Time To Shop: The dedicated staff of edhat.com was at the mall to observe shoppers heading for their cars. Our goal was to get an idea of how much shopping people do on an average trip. Do they shop until they drop and leave the mall carrying as many boxes and bags as their arms can hold? Or do they just buy one item at a time so they can come back for more shopping some time in the future?

Ed Bob Square Feet - Ed Bob Square Feet: the dedicated staff of edhat.com drove the entire State Street/Hollister corridor from the Wharf to the Bacara to see how many signs of the times we could spot. We also wanted to see how many of the signs were just plain advertising, and how many provided key information, like the amount of available square footage.

A Story With A Hitch - A Story With A Hitch: This week, the dedicated staff of edhat.com set out to put this mystery to rest. We spent much of the week driving the streets of the upper East Side to count, photograph, and geo-code all of the hitching posts.

Through Ed Colored Glasses - Through Ed Colored Glasses: Yesterday, the dedicated staff of edhat.com went out into the unfamiliar sunshine (wearing amber-colored shades) to check out the eye-protection choices of the people in town. We were surveying in front of our office, and on State Street, and in front of Tuttini’s on Carrillo, where we did a count-while-we-ate.

Water Water Everywhere, But Not A Balloon To Pop! - Water Water Everywhere, But Not A Balloon To Pop!: On Monday, the dedicated staff of edhat.com, not one to be out-done by the heroics of our former Presidents, walked around the auto-center on Hope and Calle Real. Well, it wasn’t very heroic, and it wasn’t even raining at the time, but we were there to count the number of balloons decorating the lots.

Ed Pushes Our Buttons - Ed Pushes Our Buttons: Yesterday, the dedicated staff of edhat.com stepped out into the early afternoon rain to check up on people’s propensity to push the pole-mounted pedestrian button. The rain was a real drag. Fewer people go out walking when there is a chance of their getting wet. But, the dedicated staff stood under awnings in front of mid-street crosswalks on State Street and waited for people to pass, hoping that they would cross.

Ed Chooses Sides - Ed Chooses Sides: And today, the stains and the carriages have all come out in the wash, but the etiquette is still in the books. Just as it is proper for a man to open a door for a woman, not burp or fart in her presence, and to tip his hat when she walks by, it is also proper to walk on the traffic-side of the sidewalk. And, you thought it was just so the woman could look in the shop windows

Ed Checks His Facts - Ed Checks His Facts: Yesterday’s count was an effort to update and verify the results of a count we did 14 months ago. You see, despite the fact that everyone these days is driving around talking on their cell phones, we found in our count at that time, that everyone was only 6% of drivers. In Edhat studies that followed, we found a similar cell phone usage percentage both for people walking and for people sitting at coffee shops.

Film Festival Ed-jectives - Film Festival Ed-jectives: One of the next best things about seeing a film is talking about it afterward. And, at the Film Festival, where most of the films are new and un-talked-about, the fun is even greater. The history books haven’t been written on these films. They could be great, undiscovered masterpieces. They could be new cult sensations. Or, they could be dead-on-arrival flops that might never be screened again.

The Ed Carpet - The Ed Carpet: Every day of the Film Festival, the dedicated staff of edhat.com has tried to get a Quote of the Day from Roger Durling, artistic director of the Festival. Last night when we asked him at the Bacara Resort, he said, “Leo-Mania”.

Ed is the New Black - Ed is the New Black: Yesterday the dedicated staff of edhat.com went to the Opening Night Party of the Santa Barbara Film Festival. We were there to check colors. When we arrived, the outside of the SB Courthouse building was cloaked in red, purple, yellow and blue light.

Ed Goes on a Mission - Ed Goes on a Mission: When you think of Santa Barbara, you think of palm trees, the wharf, and the Mission. The dedicated staff of edhat.com, in our never ending quest to quantify the world we live in, has already counted the palm trees along the beach and the planks on Stearns Wharf. Yesterday, we completed our triple crown of tabulation by counting the number of bricks on the front face of the Mission.

Ed is Short Changed - Ed is Short Changed: Last June, when the calendar was at the end of its journey from winter to spring to summer, we did a similar study at UCSB. Then and there we found that 40% of men wore shorts. But yesterday, in the dead of winter, at the College down the beach, we were doing it again.

Leave the Driving to Ed - Leave the Driving to Ed: Yesterday at 3:30 in the afternoon, the dedicated staff of edhat.com was in full work-mode. Sitting in the soft comfy chairs at the bar in the new Andalucian Hotel, we were sipping on drinks and watching the world go by through the big picture windows that look out onto West Carrillo.

Holiday Sch-ED-dule - Holiday Sch-ED-dule: The dedicated staff of edhat.com loitered around the empty post office. We hoped to sit down at the long wooden conference table that stands impressively in the corner of the building. But, the table was occupied by a homeless looking person who was settled in at the end of the table looking like he was the Chairman of the Board.

Postcards From the Ed - Postcards From the Ed: Over the weekend, the dedicated staff of edhat.com played dressed up. We dressed up in our tourist clothes and went out on the town. No, we didn’t don a mullet and an OC t-shirt like the guy sitting at Aldo’s in the sidewalk seating section yesterday. Our pretend tourist goal was to buy some postcards to mail to everyone back at our pretend home.

Slippery Road a’ Ed - Slippery Road a’ Ed: The dedicated staff of edhat.com decided to see if anyone pays any attention to the DMV recommendation. So, we parked the green car on a soggy street corner on Foothill Road to measure the speeds of passing cars. But, this was not any soggy street corner, it was exact same spot where we measured the speed of cars months before, back in the days when talk of drought was in air, and the roads were as dry as the laundry hanging in the windows at L’Ombrette.

Ed Checks the Calendar - Ed Checks the Calendar: The dedicated staff was looking for free calendars – you know the ones they used to give away at the bank and the local pharmacy back in the good old days. We moored our car in the Loreto Plaza Harbor and swam past shops there and up-river from the Post Office on State Street.

Don’t Drink the Water! - Don’t Drink the Water!: The dedicated staff of edhat.com was at the library to count the number of people using the drinking fountain in the lobby. It’s the one just inside the door on the plaza side of the building. That’s right, yesterday we reported on the tallest building in town. Today, we are reporting on the building with the most number of stories.

Raindrops are Falling on My Ed - Raindrops are Falling on My Ed: With the weather forecast on Edhat and elsewhere calling for rain and more rain, it seemed like a good day for an umbrella count. We wanted to see how many people used them and how many people just braved the elements with a hat or a coat or less.
