Unstoppable

2010-11-27 11:44 AM

I saw this in Greater Downtown Modesto (down't ask). Wonderful movie. The photography and sound really brought out the power and massive size of the freight trains. Denzel was his usual powerful self, his co-lead was quite good. Rated PG (I think) this movie had no sex scenes, no unnecessary profanity, no unnecessary violence. Actually, it's a family film and I loved it.

Great movie. For a docudrama of sorts, it is engaging and held my attention to the end. Good acting and some clever dialog. Definitely worth seeing with a movie pass or during the cheap times.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

2010-06-09 04:09 PM

This movie was just plain BAD. Kudos to the setting, to the promise of a story line, but the script and direction fell flat with a substandard thud. By the end of the movie I was crawling out of my skin just to leave. I would have paid the cameraman to just END IT and I would have tried the bribe if not for my little 10 yr old who wanted to see it.

The City of Your Final Destination

On the slow side, but a not unpleasurable way to pass a couple of hours. Little by way of insight into European expat life in Uruguay, maybe a bit more into the dynamics and complexities of relationships with a dramatic imbalance in power (The US-Iranian grad student and his domineering German? girlfriend, or the dead novelist's tough as nails wife vs. his young and malleable mistress.

Up in the Air

I found this movie to be cliche and dumb. It didn't really flow very well, it was not very funny, and the theme were old, tired, and not very interesting.

beautiful cinematic colors, some of the best CG FX ever. The 3D on the other hand was not very good. The embers stuff floating around was good, but that's about it. There was more 3D in the Alice in Wonderland Trailer. Overall I thought the movie was great though. 8/10

We went to see the 3D version at the Arlington. We were all blown away by Pandora, especially the fluorescent plants and insects, insects that open into glowing umbrellas and the huge birds that are ridden. Even w/o the 3D, the photography and set design was fantastic. The whole concept of the way the CGI characters are generated and operate based on the real actors just blow away all previous methodologies. My appreciation of the movie and what it represents cannot be expressed with words alone. One has to experience the movie- not watch it, keeping in mind that what you seeing is the usher in of a new generation of adventure and fantasy that Cameron allows us to share. BRAVO!

AVATAR

Awesome, wild ride, felt like you were part of the movie, sit a little closer than normal for a super 3D effects. I took some snacks to munch on during the movie, completely forgot about them in my handbag. Glad we bought that ginormous bag of popcorn and soda.

Avatar is lush, dynamic, uplifting and SCARY. In our audience, all ages were captivated, but the young adults really whooped and hollared the most.

The graphics are beautiful, unforgettable and in a way transformative. The viewer is forced to ponder what "natural" means, versus "man made" or destroyed.

This movie will challenge assumptions about what miitary power can do, the mad rush for resources, no matter the cost, how cultural differences effect perceptions and actions, and... basically what we personally consider just or unjust.

Or just sit back and be entertained: scared, overwhelmed and overjoyed, sometimes all at the same time!

The Blind Side

2009-12-30 08:04 AM

This is a new character for Sandra Bullock and I think she played it well. The interplay between husband and wife is especially touching. In fact the whole family dynamic is encouraging. It's even better to know that it's based on a true story. The real family is shown during the credits.

If you're looking for an uplifting movie with a bit of humor with a positive message, try this one.

Saw this movie at the Arlington in 3-D. The special effects and overall "look and feel" was great, and definitely worth seeing on the big screen and especially in 3D. The story was....um...."not so much". The best description I can come up with is "Dances with Wolves" meets "Dune" meets "Pocahontas" and they have a child, and that child takes some acid and has an out-of-body experience and everything glows and there are 9ft tall blue people riding dragons and stuff.

Up in the Air

This is an entertaining move with excellent acting. It has a very current theme (job layoffs) that may hit too close to home for some, but I enjoyed the story line and the various characters in it.

It's Complicated

2009-12-29 02:00 PM

This was a very enjoyable movie. Alec Baldwin is great and so is the son-in-law-to-be, whose name I've forgotten. My sister and I laughed really hard at a few parts in it and there were a few poignant moments, too. It's fun to see SB on the big screen, even if it wasn't always true to real SB.

Sherlock Holmes

2009-12-28 06:24 PM

Sherlock Holmes was totally enjoyable. It had some of the usual pitfalls; a convoluted mystery that would have done better to have had about ten less minutes devoted to it and instead devoted to Holmes' character development. But I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to see a film that's well crafted, entertaining and well-acted.

An Education

This was a cute movie starring a very cute actress. The plot was a little predictable, and the ending wraps up the loose ends a little too quickly, but overall it's a movie worth seeing.

The Men Who Stare at Goats

2009-11-30 09:58 AM

I was a little disappointed. Clooney was fun to watch, as usual, but the laughs were few and far between. The only thing that kept my interest was the "fact" that some of the story was true. Thankfully the movie was only a little over 90 minutes long...getting tired of 2.5+ hour long movies.

Blind Side

When you click on the "Blind Side" link, it's not coming up with the movie currently showing in theaters (it's coming up with a 1993 DVD of a different movie.). The current Blind Side is based on a true story and anyone, young or old, will like it. It's about a family that takes in an underprivileged young man and thru acceptance, love, and tutoring, raise him up.

2012

2009-11-14 12:02 PM

For all of its hype, the movie was disappointing. The animation was cool, but it was trivialized by the fact that the endless sequences of destruction stretched on for well over 2 hours. Overall, a pretty mediocre movie.

Can we start a section for independent films or direct to video/non-theater releases?

I just saw INK on Netflix online. It was amazingly good, especially for a such a low budget ($250K) production. This is the future of independent film. Small innovative production companies using the web for distribution. Think I'll watch it again.

The Men Who Stare at Goats

2009-11-13 06:27 PM

We saw the movie yesterday afternoon, and I was not expecting to like it, but did have several good laughs...not rolling on the floor laughter, but play on words and such. I don't like slapstick sophmoric humor, and this was not like that. Jeff Bridge was very good and George Clooney was good and Kevin Spacey was great.

Amelia

2009-11-12 01:03 PM

I was a little disappointed with this movie. I wished the movie delved more deeply into Amelia's background, so we could get to know her better. Hilary Swank is excellent, as usual, and her homely face is a dead-ringer for Earhart's.

Good to have this feature return. It's helpful and will encourage me to go to more movies. (Perhaps the Metropolitan Theatres might consider running banner ads at the top, calling attention/linking to the time listings!

The Men Who Stare at Goats

2009-11-11 08:26 PM

We saw this movie last night. We liked it! It's a quirky film, that is very funny in parts. George Clooney seems to be at his best playing dry comedy roles like this. The soundtrack is very late seventies. I am not sure I ever wanted to hear Boston again.
