Actually what I have heard is diffculty breathing calls. I heard many yeasterday including that of an infant on the East Side, and the fatal hiker call. She might have passed away from something else but it sounded like a heat stroke might have been involved.

Good advice, but as for the hiker, "chest pains" sounds like cardiac problems.

I have lived here for over 25 years and this has been the hottest and most humid summer that I can remember.

421, you must have been out of town for a couple summers, at least.

And who are these "Drink Water People?" Is this some new tribe on the scene?

I have lived here over 38 years and I agree with 421. We have a few days here and there with higher heat, but this is the first time I can remember having this long a stretch of hot humid weather.

I know this is really stupid to ask the rest of you but most of you know I aien't all there anyway. Have any of you been waking up drenched in sweat feeling like your not breathing but when you sit up your fine. The only thing I have been doing latley is drinking diet soda, more than water.

@430 sure there have been some very hot days in the past but I haven't closed my windows since June this. We have never had the heat last this long.

It's been extremely humid this summer for SB and I have lived her 40+ year. There may have been other summers with some high humidity but this year is the most humid one that I can remember for a longggg time. Regardless, Roger is right, drink water because you're going to sweat whether or not you like it. Most homes here don't have A/C.

Roger, even diet soda isn't good for you and it can make you sick. Water is best!

Basically, every year since the 80s has been hotter than the last. Thank God it's all just a coincidence. I saw it on Fox News.

490, good one, Ha! What do you bet Weather.com reports SB's high today like 78 degrees. I live between Hope and La Cumbre, where currently it is 95!

When I first came to SB in 1972 it seemed like the summers were milder and the winters were wetter. Now the reverse seems true.
On the other hand when I was growing up in South Texas way back when a day like today would be considered mild as I remember hot and humid days where the temperature would be over 100 degrees and it would be pouring down rain. So we really can't complain about the weather but if you are an older person I would avoid exercising outdoors and drink plenty of water.

Roger-- Please don't drink diet soda. Water is so much better for you. Drinking soda of any kind (diet or non), your body absorbs less than 20% of it. Water is so much better on these hot days.Even better, make a re-hydration water drink with salt and sugar, -- google it for precise measurements--web med (dot)com, I believe has one.

I get in the mood sometimes, kinda like once in a while I like a near beer although I haven't had one of those in a few years..

Ranting: Heather, I agree; the tv weather reports make me crazy! Weather Channel had us at 78 yesterday?! Weather underground site, which lists weather stations, had State X Alamar at 96 degrees with a heat index of 100. That's what it felt like. I'm vegging out; I cannot bear to get into a 110 degree car with weak air conditioning.
The fact we got 2/100" of rain in Sept. is definitely an argument for humidity. And remember how it was almost 100 degrees the day before those two showery days?

You can think you're ill from dehydration, when actually you've drunk too much water, and diluted the balance of your body's electrolytes; you can become ill and die. Two rehydrating recipes used world-wide: 5 cups water, 6 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp salt; or 5 cups water, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp baking soda,2 tbsp. sugar. Packets of rehydrating powder, just add water, also available at pharmacies. And BTW, dogs get heat stroke, too. A dog is more vulnerable than their owner when being jogged on a hot day - only their mouth area and paws can sweat and their backs overheat.

!! Roger--our feeling of not breathing when sleeping may be sleep apnea. Where your airways get shut off, so you are struggling to inhale. Happens a lot to really severe snorers. Dangerous lack of oxygen happens. NOT good for heart, etc.
Has your Doc checked you out on this? Anyone hear you breathe at night? If you go for more than 8-10 seconds between breaths, likely have sleep apnea. You can get a machine to help you breathe at night. Check with the Vets clinic on this.

Being overweight can be a huge cause of sleep apnea and losing the weight can cure it a lot of the time. That was my problem and it was scaring my family, it was hard but I lost 80 lbs and cured my apnea. Roger, you often mention that you are overweight and that could be the problem. Maybe you should discuss with your Dr. or get Crazy Belinda to go with you on walks instead of using your bike sometimes, we need you healthy!

I went through all that with Dr. Diaz he had a rep of Lincare come to my house and do the finger test over night they told me my oxygen levels were way down I was going to kick the bucket if I did not have all the oxygen tanks and the friggen medicine etc..etc..etc. The fire department was here every other day cause the whole thing was giving me aniexty attacks..I found out that my oxygen wasn't that bad and I could not sleep with all that scrap all over my face. I was catching colds all the time. I was sicker..Then I figured out that Dr. Diaz liked to prescribe lots of meds. I quit using the machine but use the treatments once in a while..It took an act of congress to get the company to take that machine back. I forgot about it for along time it was in the garage for along time. I had to get Dr. Diaz to tell them or write some kind of order. Then they sent this fella over with muscles and tattos on his head and the guy stared me down and treated me weird as if he was trying to bully me into using the oxygen machine..People just love charging that medicare! I guess I need to lose some weight and not drink sodys..I know I got that sleep scrap..

There is a big difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion can be treated with cooling off and hydrating. Heat stroke is a much more serious problem. You have gone past sweating and feel hot and dry. It can lead to death and should be treated medically. exhaustion can lead to heat stroke so both are to be avoided. A retired first responder.
