i had 23-25 absences in each class, per quarter, graduated with a 3.8 and an excess of 25 "units"

School sucks if you are not engaged. Im a successful professional these days and I thank the heavens this sort of nazi tyranny was not around when i was @ Dos Pueblos in the mid 90s.

To the folks supporting the DA Truancy intervention, be careful what you wish for.

It's true some truants may respond to a phone call from the DA's office and get their school attendance act together.

On the otherhand, young people, in general, crave attention, and negative attention is better than none. So a phone call from the DA's office? Later, a referral to the Juvenile Court? Some kids defiantly remain truant to garner the attention, earn their "stripes" amongst peers, and stick it to their parents, the world, etc. Ask a Juvenile Court judge about truant cases to gain another perspective on the problem.

Far better to understand what is going on with the child, his school, and his parents and develop suitable remediation one case at a time than constructing more opportunities for children to encounter our criminal justice system.

@289- yes the school calls the day of absent and says your "12 grade child was missing from one or more classes" they do not tell you which and when the parent ask the kid they get this answer- I wasn't missing I was just late or my teacher let me go early or etc..... I am a parent of 3 High School aged children and I assure you we are NOT lazy parents. I follow up on every call made to my home. @403 no the school will not give them detention. They do not have the resources and when I asked about that they said as a parent I could request Saturday School but it had to be scheduled so that they had the staff to do so. Which I did. I wish they had after school detention or my favorite when I skipped once- In school service where you had to wear and orange vest and cleanup the school grounds while your peers were in class watching you out the window. Very effective!! I never did that again.

3 children all different same very involved parents who care about what their kids are doing. Some just need a bit more help than others.

Ha, If I were still a student and pulling that sort of nonsense you wouldn't be able to get a hold of me by CALLING me.

What a bunch of crap.

No wonder the DA didn't have time to take my case to court when I tried to press charges against somebody for battery!

@ "Which of the DA's cases are getting dealt down or complaints not filed to pursue this truancy stuff?"
- the original report said there was restored funding for the program, so it's not taking from something else.

@ "Clearly the reasons for skipping school listed in the article indicated trouble already in these children's lives. Let's just pile some more on."
- again, per the article, the point is that the "task force", if you will, is trying to source the truancy problem so it can be addressed.

@"And by that they mean three full days. so, ifas San Marcos student skips ONE class a day ( aka 1/4 of a school day) can do it 12 times before they get a call. Lazy seniors use this to an advantage - I made sure I only skipped 11 back in my day :) "
- I got a phone call last week because my son was TARDY for 1 class at San Marcos....

This is a great program. Some families need some intervention, and if doesn't happen everyone suffers unfortunately.

I welcome this! I only hope this applies for all school ages and not just the higher grades. I have a niece and nephew who are in 2nd grade and kindergarten. Their parents are going through a divorce and whenever their mom has them they don't make it to school. They are crazy behind developmentally and someone needs to hold her responsible.

Ferris Bueller missed school 9 times before his mother got the phone call from the principal... Why is the DA doing the job of school administrators? This is absurd.

Some kids are going to go to school, some kids aren't going to go to school. It has always been this way. There is no reason the school system can't enforce the rules. 3 unnaproved absences and the DA gets involved? Sounds like a further waste of tax payer dollars.

Define police state. My version must be way different.

Why would the DA enforce what the school should be enforcing? Sounds a little reactionary and like one poster said, like a police state.

It all sounds good until your kid gets labeled as a trouble maker at a young age by the system. Starting kids young in courts and incarceration has little advantage for self-esteem. Clearly the reasons for skipping school listed in the article indicated trouble already in these children's lives. Let's just pile some more on. The schools should be able to identify missed classes and communicate with parents. Since when has the DA's office and the jails had the best plan of rehabilitation? When someone gets into trouble the common practice is to throw them together with all the other trouble makers and let the melting pot boil.

403: You better believe I know it is my job, but the kid made it through high school never getting a detention, yet cutting all the time. I kept track of my kids attendance record everyday. I begged them to give him a detention because that is what the school policy handbook states will happen (something we parents and my son had to sign and return). If you have a policy at the school, it should be properly enforced. He was grounded and reprimended at home on a regular basis, however he knew the school did not care. Besides the parents, the schools should be showing our kids how they face consequences for their actions or don't write handbooks full of policies that you don't back. If it was his job, they would fire him (hopefully).

314:

You do realize that if the school caught your child ditching school, they would probably give them detention and notify YOU. You are the parent, and are the sole person that should be in charge of their punishment. Calling the school and expecting them to take care of it sounds like you didn't want to do so yourself.

Its not like your student's attendance record is some national secret, you can call the school anytime to find out how many times your kid has ditched class.

Never a waste of time paying attention to how are children are growing up. Ditching school and getting away with it leads to slacking in life. Teaching kids to be responsible in life is one of the best things you can do for their futures. A "I don't feel like it" attitude is a huge handicap in life. I think the DA's office is perfect for the roll of enforcement. If they do a good job it should lesson the number of criminal cases in the future. The better quality of people we can produce the lesser the bourdon on society. In the future.

The truancy program sounds like a very good idea!

The schools are a laughing stock because of the quality of education. Look at all the remedial English (and Math) classes there are at SBCC, link for schedule. It's a disgrace.

Sounds like a real waste of time for the DA. They won't be hiring more resources for this, and they're already overtaxed with real crimes. SB Schools have become a laughing stock.

Seems odd that the District Attorney's Office has the desire and the resources to track and make phone calls to the thousands of students each year who skip class three times or more.

Which of the DA's cases are getting dealt down or complaints not filed to pursue this truancy stuff?

If some parents and some schools need an outside party to help them get kids to school, something is wrong with both.

Is our local education system, with its "all must go to college" mantra, causing its on truancy problem by not offering more career technical courses? Such courses (construction, auto, culinary, horticulture, hotel mgmt) might actually attract students to schools each day...

And when was the last time parents of truants had to take a parenting class with a "Nanny 911" facilitator?

As the mom of a 14 year old in 9th grade, and an 18 year old who just graduated, I welcome this program. I would see my kid skateboarding down the street during school time and when I told the school, they would answer "What do you want us to do?" It has been a joke! Parents should be paying attention and the schools should be too. Report the kids, it is their job to attend class, hold them accountable!

I agree, this program makes the parents stand up and pay attention. Plus the school calls home that day of the abscence, so mom and dad are being lazy and not dealing with their kids actions. It is important to have an education, dumbing down are kids is not an option.

I am glad the program is coming back. It helped students who needed help, finding the root of the reason for truancy, and getting the families help and resources. The negative comments here on edhat are probably from people who have zero experience with the program or the positive impact it had when it was operational before.
