Show that same picture from today and you'll see all the reasons why this town has so many so-called modern day problems....traffic, pollution, crime, etc.

Phenomenal photo. Santa Barbara used to be such a happy, easy-going place. I guess being anti-growth is a losing battle, but I will fight to the bitter end.

Does anyone else remember the "talking" skunk that KEYT kept and showed on t.v." I barely remember my mom taking me to visit the skunk.

The sandspit is so different, wonder when the current structure was built.

The not surprising truth is Santa Barbara is a great place to be, and a lot of people want to live here. The questions isn't to fight growth or accept it but how to manage the growth that is inevitable. No place in the world with Santa Barbaras charm can restrict growth completely. That said there has been some terrible mismanagement along the way.

What a bucolic scene. Wide roads, little traffic. Railroad is a major feature. Big lots so you could have a vegetable garden on your property.

I guess we'd have to look in another country to find a similar scene today- maybe New Zealand?

I just watched this on the NPR website. It's fascinating. At the end there's a photo of three "bums" in Battery Park. The difference from today. . . they are wearing suits & ties.

Heard the same story this morning on NPR, I want to take a look from home. Dealing with photography as a hobby, it would be cool to check some of these pics.

Seriously, where would people go if they wanted to find the slower pace but natural beauty us old-timers miss? Has this already been a separate post?

Cool picture. But come on, "TV Hill?" Seriously? Isn't that some made-up place name that only KEYT uses?

Thank you OP and thanks Dan for the link. I took a quick look at the SB photos - really great! I'll have to spend a little more time with the local pics and all the others...what a prolific photographer! And the images are truly priceless. This story is why I love Edhat!

146, you're right, TV Hill is a made-up name; never called that before Bill Luton Sn built a television station there, been TV Hill ever since.

I don't know 303, wining is okay by me, it's the whining that gets me down.

Thanks to the OP, thanks to Dan and Yin Yang so much for the links, what great shots! So much green in those photos of downtown. Remember that radio tower right there in Radio Square? I'd forgotten all about that. Recognized a lot of old buildings that are gone now--like the old Y at Carrillo and Chapala. Big Norfolk Island Pine still at that corner, though.

Took me right back. Yes, it was a sleepy little town in the 50s and 60s. 101 was mostly two lanes, and north of the stoplights there were just stop signs at the places where there are freeway exits now. But change is inevitable. Just try to manage it. Our town has done better than most in that regard.

thanks to the comments of those who say "manage" rather than restrict. We don't own the opportunity to live here exclusively andjif restricted then we have the wealthy vs the poor. Without a strong middle class it might be a beautiful town but not a "community." Change comes and hopefully with it families who can add to the complexion of our wonderful town.
