If the cops were going to arm themsleves with a high power weapon - at least purchase one that can cut right through an engine block here. The city couldn't even afford the right weapons, and these were donated.

the placement of the AR seems a little weird... wonder why they have it in such a "hey look at me" spot... #intimidationtactics

Oh contemporary news you slay me.

an AR 15 is not a "high powered" rifle. However why is this news? The partol bikes have had them for ages ( well technically those were SBRs - sweet little devils at that )?

Must be a slow week...

I invite all you critics to Gooogle "mass shooting....workplace shooting....school shooting." These incidents are becoming fairly common. Many of those incidents happened in towns much smaller and less violent than SB. Still think cops don't need a rifle capable of firing a single accurate shot from a safe distance in order to stop one of these rampages??

Glad our Police have them. Agree with 720! How many of you have heard of Hillary's small arms treaty?

Purchasing AR-15s for the motorcycle police was a great move.

I pray that they will never need to use them, just as I hope they never need to use their sidearms.

This is the perfect example of a "better to have and not need than need and not have" situation.

Hat's off to the Police Foundation for their generosity.

these guns will be needed when the county and city start bouncing checks and all the civil servants take to the streets!

I am just waiting for the day that Santa Barbara Police Department buys its own Nuclear missile. If the criminals have nuclear, so must the police.

This isn't the 1920's anymore.

My vote is that each and every motorcyle tow an anti aircraft battery. You never know when the next offensive movie or cartoon will come out.

I find it ironic that a regular Joe like @762 sees no reason why HE should not own such a weapon but questions how often police officers find themselves in a position to NEED such a weapon. Has hypocrisy become a cultural thing with us now?

This is ridiculous. What will they need next, bazookas? Just wait until one of their ASSAULT weapons high power rounds goes thru one building and hits a bystander. 720 is exactly right. and 717. Why don't they go shake down some bikers or gang members instead?

More proof we are living in a police state. THEY WORK FOR US... although none of them remember that fact.

The patrol cars have had these rifles for a decade. The motorcycles just acquired them. I think the officers prefer to have the necessary equipment BEFORE a North Hollywood type shootout or Columbine type school shooting occurs. That type of weapon can bring that type of incident to an end very quickly.

762 here. I did not say they should or should not have them. My inquiry was about the frequency of our PD finding themselves in a situation where it would be necessary to use one. They can have whatever they want in my opinion. I would like to know if it is becoming a regular event for the police to need that weapon though. If SB is becoming that dangerous it's citizens should be aware.

@762, if you own one then shouldn't the Police have at least the same weapon as the average citizen?

How often do the SBPD officers come upon someone heavily armed enough to warrant the use of an AR? Don't get me wrong I love the AR-15. I own one as well. I just wonder if this is a serious issue that we should be aware of in SB.

720:

Unless you wish to point out every instance in the media, I think your claim is unsubstantiated.

Agree with Yin Yang on this one. Not a gun person myself but an event like the N Hollywood shootout can happen anywhere, anyday.

720- nice observation. It is funny how when the public owns it they make them out to be something bad, but when the good ol peace officers have one it's just a rifle. Not to mention the clips that are illegal for us to own.

So when in the hands of Police, we call them "High Powered" rifles, when "Joe" and "Bob" have them they are "Assault Weapons"?

anyone else see a problem with these terms?

I can't believe all these positive responses. I can't think of one instance of a shooting in sb with anything close to this type of fire power. The police don't need this. This will only mean more police shooting people. Just watch.

I kind of wish they could bust some caps on bike riders who run through red lights but of course that would be over the top.

Great to see. The police need more firepower. They are risking their lives every day and need the correct tools to deal with the criminal element.

How are the guns secured to the bike?

Ever since the 1997 Hollywood bank shootout, which I watched on tv, I have zero problem with the cops having firepower.

More fire power to take down jay walkers and cyclists that don't obey street signs.

And what's the need for 60-90 rounds in one magazine for a rifle. Seems just a little excessive. That's a surefire mag in that rifle.
