Sounds like Rattray didn't have the children's welfare in mind. Maybe those making donations could get involved; a 14 yr devoted employee was treated badly and the kids short-changed.

Somebody has some deep pockets and needs a tax break....Help this man get his job back and get these kids the help they really do need. This man is a role model, teacher, father and a great citizen of this small town. Please someone do something if you can!

I agree, you get monies from the Chumash Casino which I am sure was a nice amount, then ax a hardworking employee with one week notice! This is ludicrous! I would like to know the salaries of the current staff of this "non-profit"! Another sad note was the ratio of 100 employees to 5000 kids! C'mon Rattray! This is sickening!

I'm sure there is more to this story than is contained in the Independent story. There's all kinds of politics going on with the board and staff of most non-profits. We'll never know what really happened unless one of the parties involved decides to spill the beans. Otherwise there are not enough reporters in this town to really get to the bottom of it.

I've known Bernard since I was a child going to the boys n girls club. He would feed me and my brother through the programs even though we were poor and not able to buy the membership. I tip my hat to you Bernard I'm 24 now and my bro is 22 imagine how much families he's helped out that we're struggling! You did him dirty boys and girls club...

It's likely that he was employed "at-will," meaning that his employment could be terminated at any time. But give me a break, one week is not the non-profit industry standard. I have terminated people for misconduct and given them more than one week.

Woa, I worked in non-profits for 25 years, and Rattaray's claim is the first I've heard of an industry standard for 1 week notice when being fired. No such thing in my opinion. Something smells fishy.

I agree,.. it doesn't feel all above board to secure the funds then ax an important staff member. Something doesn't add up.

nice of Rattray to wait until he had secured the $300,000 in his fundraising pleas earlier this year, to fire a longtime devoted staff member.

So he gets laid off yet Primo Boxing is forgiven the money they owe. Doesn't make any sense.

Hopeful Mr. Hicks will find a great position elsewhere to help the children with his huge great heart!
