I love this post! I always feel slightly defensive when out-of-towners say in a condescending manner, "Weather? What weather? You don't even know what seasons are in SB," or something similar. Just because our season changes don't blow you across the country doesn't mean they don't exist. All my life I reach September and can't wait for the way the light changes in fall and the way the creek smells in the rainy winter. Then, come March, I'm eagerly anticipating the first warm beach days of spring and hoping for a nice but fireless summer :)

Today I saw some maple-type trees with leaves changing color, already.

Some say the oaks know what is to come. When they make and drop many acorns rain will be early and plentiful. I hope the trees do know, we could use the rain. Two seasons here:Fire and Flood; Paradise otherwise.

If you need to see signs of seasonal changes, drive to the top of Pedregosa to see the trees as they change color :)

My family still lives in Massachusetts and when they came for an extended visit I explained that we know the seasons are changing by the colors of the cream filling in Oreo cookies and the wrappers of the bite -sized candy bars. But seriously, the days are getting shorter and shorter as we barrel along towards the end of DST in November.

We have two seasons. Rain and Fire. And sometimes there is an overlap.

Back east (of the Rockies) you know when the seasons are changing because there are definite demarcation signs to watch for. Here in CA we have gradual transitions where the seasons slowly merge from one to the other.
