Sad, very sad. Total misuse of my (and your) tax dollars. Mayor Schnieder, I'm ashamed of you and any Council members who gave away my money. You should resign, effective today. I'm outraged!

Dan 39, I agree. I have read several articles about Primo, and all were positive. Primo IS this couple, making a difference in the lives of hundreds of at risk kids. Not only do they encourage kids to become physically fit, but they give the kids a place to go after school to do their homework. Lets support them.

This is a terrible decision. An organization that cannot keep its word should be ended. As to helping youth in my opinion boxing is a brutal sport that encourages violence and will not be any loss. Gving of public funds for this group is ridiculous, and a slap in the face to taxpayers.

What kind of message does this send to those kids? It is okay to not be responsible as long as you are a "good person". Has anyone ever examined their books? It would seem the owners are incapable of running this organization. Time and again they get bailed out and time and again they fail. If they want to help kids why don't they volunteer with an organization that actually teaches children to be responsible instead of teaching them that because they are poor they are entitled to taxpayer dollars. Shame on you Jean and Joe.

Lovely the way Mayor Schneider just a few months ago was claiming that the City was broke and that voters needed to pass her sales tax hikes, but--as this article demonstrates--she's all too happy to see our money spent on things other than core city services. I guess Mayor Schneider misled us because broke cities don't just write-off $53,000 in back rent. Or does Mayor Schneider just want more money from us to spend on her preferred charities? What sticks in my craw is that the $53,000 the City just wrote-off could have been used to hire a new police officer or firefighter, replaced worn our equipment, or to fix a few potholes. Instead, the City just threw good money after bad.

A first blush I agree with the poster who said it sounds like ransom. If you can't pay, you don't get to box. Let's bust open those lockers for a spontaneous inspection and see how many of those lockers have iphones, $100 tennis shoes and food stamps in them. Helene Schneider. sigh.

This is a hideous precedent. As 206 says, which money-strapped group is going to be next?

Is SB a city or a charity, because I can't tell anymore. Primo is a private organization; it signed a contract with the City (and its taxpayers) to pay a certain amount of rent each month; but Primo failed to hold up its end of the bargain. Therefore, it should repay its old debt and current rent, or it needs to move to a cheaper location. No single non-profit deserves special protection over other worthwhile causes. And now that the City has forgiven Primo’s debt, other organizations/companies renting city-owned buildings will ask for the same favor. This will put the City into a deeper financial hole, meaning there is less money for stuff like cops, firefighters, parks, and roads. Sorry, but the taxpayers got hosed on this one. Does anyone know how Dale Francisco and Randy Rowse voted?

I used to agree with some of these comments, but in 2011 I read an article in the Indie about Primo. It painted a realistic portrait of the situation. They were going down, but they did a lot of great work, much of it paid for out of pocket. When Fiesta rolled around I saw they had a food booth. I bought $10 worth of food but gave a $20. I see the action by the city in the same way.

I don't know if you can call it a precedent: "The city had already granted a waiver of $33,760 in past due rent and penalties." This is another $23,000. That is a lot to forgive, especially since the city "reduced the annual rent going forward by 50 percent to $10,000 per year." I'm against it, unless they're going to do that for other youth-oriented non-profits.

While I don't like to see the City throwing money away, this is one of the rare cases that I can agree. It is a relatively small amount in comparison to the federal deficit and it does help maintain an important part of our community.

What a JOKE. Yet I, as a taxpaying member of the public, must pay every time I want to rent a spot in the park, or city building? There are MANY non-profits in this City that do amazing things with youth, primarily setting an example by paying their bills, etc. I'm sure those groups could do amazing things if they had such a place. This is horrible precedent, can't believe this Council did it. Shame.
