Oooh. I am intrigued. I will see what I can find out and try to write a poem about the history. If the OP has any other tidbits of history about the house, please do tell. :) Stay tuned... http://www.independent.com/news/clickety-clack/

hedge: the indestructible Eugenia. Still going, it looks like. My parent's former house in San Jose still has two, going from a 1930's planting, despite the Eugenia lerps.

How great that EdHatters came up with the answer so quickly! Amazing that the house seems to have changed very little over the years (notice the latticework in the old and the new). Hope the OP is able to get the photo of his wife in front of the house . . . her Grandma should love it!

Nathan Benz' shop? How cool. Nathan Benz aka Bentz lived in a Greene & Greene house on the lower Riviera, seen here (if the link posts) http://www.worldarchitecturemap.org/buildings/n-bentz-house or at World Architecture Map dot org I love the dolphins or dragons (?) on the gable peaks in the 1930s photo. I wonder if those still exist somewhere.

Kind of a charming house and charming edhat happening! Ongoing compliments to all at edhat! :-) Would anyone reading this story possibly be interested to follow this with the history of the house and its ownership? I can suggest many sources like the SB County Assessor's Office records; the City Planning and Zoning; the SB Library and/or News-Press Morgue File of Clippings; The SB Association of Realtors Records of Sales Multiple Listing photos etc. Community/Neighborhood Elders; Owner and Former Owners. Fun edhatters' project? ====== PS: Re the "O Street" reference: Having no knowledge of the initial letter written by or to a family member that started all this, but with a smiling conjecture in mind, could the "O" reference possibly be to Santa Barbara's good old smoking days? The days before laws like the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937? Back when the house was designed and built? The architecture appears to have been before o as in opium got blue-nosed out of our once free city? Would further research lead to even more of the fun in this sharing of information on edhat?

This was moved from State street where in the 1900's it was the Oriental shop of Nathan Benz, a very famous art dealer. That's why the architecture style. I met his widow many years once in San Francisco where she was almost one hundred years old, living happily by herself. She told of her and Nathan meeting the Emperess of China !!!! This is one for Neal Graffee to expand on. It was located across from the Arlington Hotel, I think.

OP here. Thanks so much for locating it! I'm not sure if I've ever driven by and noticed it, and with the fuzzy memory of my grandma-in-law I don't think I ever would have found it on streetview searching (which takes forever to cruise down a street, even with a fast connection). We'll have to see if we can get a photo of my wife standing in the same position to send to her grandmother :)

That's quite unusual architecture for downtown Santa Barbara. Anyone know more of the history of the house? It looks Asian and the fish on the roof hint to possibly a fisherman building it...

I lived in the house in the early 80's. Story was that in the 1890's it was a place of ill repute, there was gambling in the front rooms and pretty ladies in the back one. I remember lots of spiders. The hedge grew very tall so one could not see in from the streets. I had put a mat to sleep on in the front room as my kids had the other 2 rooms. Early one morning my girlfriend and I were "busy" when she looked out from here superior position and noticed that the landlord had trimmed the hedge so that any one driving or walking by could see all! I miss that house!
