While living on the Mesa near SBCC I used to see 2 albino raccoons and 2 regulars who traveled together. (1990's) They were very cute but fearless!

318477: Fair enough... this is indeed a "blonde" rather than a true albino. article explains the difference among common, blonde, red and albino varieties, with pictures. http://homesteadbound.hubpages.com/hub/Red-and-Blonde-Raccoons The so-called Albino Raccoon of IV legend was probably a blonde also, based on the pictures of I've seen.

Technically, this is not an albino. Raccoons come in colors ranging from the classic black mask version to red, blonde and buff, often depending upon habitat. This one is more blonde with visible stripes and markings. A true albino would be completely white or ivory with pink eyes, ears, nose, etc. True albino mammals are extremely sensitive to the sunlight and often blind. Beautiful animals!

It's the same as with the Highway medians. Animals (at least the smaller ones) that stray onto the highway would have a better chance of survival if the medians had small gaps built in. As it is now, all of the skunks, opossums and raccoons get to the median, panic and turn around. Splat. If they could go straight through . . .
Or, better yet, if they had a habitat under crossings all their own.
I went to the one of the big hearings re: removal of trees and installment of new medians along Hwy 101, many years ago (Goleta). I spoke out about wildlife. No one cared about roadkill, that's for sure. Anthropocentricity rules.

Same with the Highway medians. Poor animals get to the median, panic and try to run back the other way. If the medians had small gaps, at least the smaller animals (raccoons, opossums, skunks) could pass through and stand a better chance for survival. But, no. Anthropocentricity rules the day. We must all drive 65mph. We don't give a damn about wildlife. If any of us had spoken up about the storm drain screens, it would have been a waste of breath. "Budget!" they would have cried.

It seems like the gutter drains that are being screened off to prevent waste from going to the ocean--good idea--could have been outfitted to accomplish the goal without becoming prison bars for raccoons and other animals. Raccoons especially are smart enough to lift or move a hinged plate or grate. Instead there are rigid plates that are tough enough to protect a Hummer. For coffee cups and leaves? Unfortunate.

The first time I saw an albino raccoon (1970s), I told my friends and none of them believed me. I had the photo to prove it. There was a bright yellow bowl and a blue indoor/outdoor rug, for contrast. No denying that kind of proof. I was later told this raccoon was a "regular" up at Francesci (sp?) Park. This meant he had come over two miles to play in my garden. (Their natural range is 25 sq. miles.) Next albino I saw was a tiny kit. Got some photos again. He didn't last long. A few nights later, mom raccoon was back, babies in tow, but no little white kit. Sad. I'm glad all of the raccoons are doing well. When the storm drains are screened off, that will "kill" one of their main highways into the 'hoods. Also sad.

Had an albino 'coon around our house (Westside) back in the early 80's--very cool, glad to see they're still out there.

I saw one in my Goleta backyard more than 15 years ago. At first I thought it was a white cat hanging around with raccoons, until I saw the markings. So interesting!
