306, yes, getting add codes could be difficult but perhaps he/she should have gone to the class and asked directly. I did that and got the code. If the student did all of that and the prof. never responded, I'd recommend that he go to the registration office with a letter, explaining the situation, documenting all the time he/she tried ... and it is possible they might make an exception. If he hasn't been attending the class, it probably is too late. What's absolutely striking is how many remedial classes there are in English and math. If the community college is hurting, how about demanding to get some of the money that is going to the public high schools and clearly not be used well?

On another note ... I know an SBCC student who tried up until the deadline (Saturday) to get into a credit class at the college ... he needed an "add code" from the instructor and never got a response to multiple emails and phone messages. The computer shows 5 empty seats in the class and actually empty seats in almost all of the classes that that particular professor teaches ... That's a lot of money the college will lose by not even having the decency to respond to an add request, let alone give out the necessary code. Makes me really think twice about a financial situation they're in.

@250 a voice of reason is refreshing. I appreciate and agree with your opinion. Is there any chance that you could expand your thoughts and address those who think others ought to pay for their common needs such as housing, food, shoes, and cell phone? I keep seeing these ads looking for housing and the housing allowance is anywhere from $850 to $1,400. Basically, if you can't afford to take these classes (at cost) then you just don't get to take the class. It's simple really. Thank you.

Remember, SB community, the taxes you have paid for so many years to fund wars, politicians and stupid government programs also funds good things like state parks, education, and help for the unemployed. The adult ed classes weren't "free" in the true sense - we have all put in some money to offer the parenting, older adult, health and safety, etc, classes for the betterment of our population. The state has not cut off funding for them and even encourages the CCC's to offer them, but to also keep in mind the priorities of the CCC's (basic ed and job training). SBCC has cut back considerably the last 3 years on what they offer in the adult ed program and I commend them for that. However, cutting out ALL of the state-funded courses that are not basic skills or job training is not wise and will not serve the community well. I'm sure the new president realizes that, and there will be a more efficient yet smaller adult ed program for us in the near future.

In 2009 when formerly free adult ed classes were being converted to fee classes under the new state Chancellor's Office guidelines, the former board of trustees initiated an Adult Ed scholarship program which allowed adult ed students to continue taking their favorite classes. These scholarships continue. Community support will keep SBCC adult ed strong.

Glad to see classes will survive in some form and don't have a problem paying for them (always thought I should, actually, why should tax-payers pay for me to learn to oil paint?).

yes the prices have gone up, but when you do the math, my $90 art class is really $10 for three hours, which is $3 an hour so for ten weeks I can't complain, and I am retired and on a budget like everyone else, I just hope the program does not shut down!

Yes, the 'free ride' is a thing of the past. The recreation class I have taken for 6 years costs $75(up from $5)

These meetings were last week, and it is curious why they are listed again. That said, does any one know if anything creative or positive for adult ed will come from those three meetings? We do not need new furniture as mentioned in those meetins. We need classes offered with realistic fees starting with better access to the catalogs so the public can learn about the many wonderful classes. Classes start today and many may be cancelled because the people responsible for getting catalogs distributed have not done their job. Many catalogs which are around town are there because several volunteers have asked for boxes of the booklets and have personally taken them to places where people can obtain them. Santa Barbara is a special community with people making sure that adult ed stays strong and these volunteers are unsung heroines and heroes. Sign up for a class and send the message that adult ed must survive. Thank you.

That was last week, those forums. And unfortunately by what I could hear in one, on Wednesday, Jack Friedlander not speaking into the mike and being very hard to hear, Adult Ed as we've known it, aka "Continuing Ed", is almost a thing of the past --- and will be so by the end of this academic year, replaced by whatever CLL is to be.

Bye Bye Adult Ed. It was nice knowing you. I wonder how long the CLL will be around?
