Pests...pure and simple! If you don't understand that or it offends you then you are a townie! Apologies to Jeff Foxworthy...

Pests are in the eye of the beholder. They sure are cute.

I will agree that they are so very cute and unfortunately some very destructive animals. Get a male friend that has testosterone to pee in your yard at the places they like to enter. I used to have a very ravaged yard until I learned this trick.

They ARE pests but beautiful and playful ones at that. Make your property safe from these critters so you can enjoy them! :)

They don't do nearly the amount of damage that the deer and the gophers/moles do. I'd take them any day, certainly over the darn deer.

Sure hope they are not using that flat roof as a latrine.

A raccoon on the roof is better than a skunk under the deck!

That's a great picture! I do love them but they are destructive in the wrong environment. I, too, prefer them to gophers! Just keep your yard clean and garbage locked up!

827P, I beg to differ! Raccoons can cause lots of damage! We had a sizeable raccoon that decided to pull up a 3' x 3' hole in our old shingle roof and take up residence in our warm attic. We got him? her? out and patched the roof. He/She came back about 2 weeks later to pull up more right above our bedroom! My husband ran outside in his underwear. There he was yelling at this raccoon and spraying it with the hose while in his underwear at 1:00 in the morning and I'm in the bedroom shhooshing him out the window. We were in hysterics later wondering what the neighbors thought! Destructive little buggers!

@817: One afternoon a friend tried peeing at a raccoon that was on his balcony, and they almost threw him out of Bonnymead.

I like raccoons. My old neighbor had a trap out in his front yard, I took a bat and flattened the trap. Raccoons were happy! Neighbor wasn't. That's alright he no longer traps them...

That is wierd. I have seen plenty of raccoons but never more than one at a time. To see five sitting right next to each other.... wow!

The other night, well after the sun set, I was sitting down next the covered parking outside my SB Highlands townhouse. I was enjoying a cigarette while playing games on my cell phone. We have skunks and raccoons galore at the Highlands, but they usually scamper at the sight of us humans. I watched as a rather large raccoon walked towards me, across the parking lot, across a large patch of grass, stopping about four feet away. The raccoon then stood up straight and tall on its hind legs, staring at me. I think it was confused and a bit curious because of the glow of my cell phone. Anyway, I quickly stood up straight and tall on my hind legs, and that raccoon almost crapped himself running away.

We had two at my neighbor's house living in her Sycamore until her nephew harassed them with a bb gun. I feel sorry for the wild critters in my neighborhood because most or all of the skunks and possums end up as road kill. I wonder what they eat because they didn't come in my yard to eat the tomatoes and jalapenos in my garden- maybe because my dogs made them wary even though they are inside with us all night.
