UH: How can you tell when a path is public or private? I'd feel awkward walking some of those places without knowing it was public (since so many look quite private). Along with many others, I'd love a map so I can check someone of these out on a walk a bit more easily. This was a great article!

The path down from Grand Ave thru St. Francis and the community garden has been gone for more than 20 years. Unlike the wonderful pedestrian pathways that UH has described for us, there is a perfectly good (and brand new - thanks to Cottage Health System) sidewalk less than a block away from that vacant lot that takes you safely down to the bottom of the Riviera.

Thank you for this lovely article on these little hidden jewels. When we lived in the Upper East, my husband and I used to walk lots of these in the evenings. I love the idea of a movement to "Save the PublicWalkways" Would the two of you be interested in heading it up? I'll contribute effort and money and perhaps other Edhatters will join in.

There is a secret path on the 100 block of west Yanonali in the burton mound area.

Always late to the party but ... recently discovered the super-cool pedestrian bridge where Anapamu crosses the freeway. Steep, but fun and a great view :)

UH here - OK, we'll do our best to map the public pedestrian easements and "secret" routes and publish the map on Edhat. @839P - we do have a website, and its: santabarbaraurbanhikers.com, but it's still just getting up and runnning and isn't quite yet fully operational. It's just another one of our projects and with so little time and so many places to discover, the web page is not a big priority for us. Maybe one day, or at least we hope!

Amazing. Thank YOU

I want a map too.

Do the Urban Hikers have a website? I'd be all over it!

Oh how delightful! I love reading about these paths. A few I have found and had fun using for my walk. Now I have more to explore. I do yearn for a map. Thank you for the article and photos, as always.

My favorite is the steps/ramps that connect APS and Sierra. There's also one that goes from APS to Plaza Bonita.

Several years ago there WAS an attempt to get the major paseos opened up. Naturally homeowners who had co-opted the space objected but many were cleared.

Another favorite is the one from Plaza Rubio to the 400 block of East Padre. Watch out for doggie doo, though.

Thank you for the tour of these little known gems. I can't wait to start exploring them. What a great article.

I want to caution anyone using the path that leads down from Mission Ridge to APS. That path, with its many steps, is FAR TOO STEEP (going downhill, especially) for anyone who may not have great sense of balance.

Also: I used to walk from Grand Ave and use that path down to St. Francis and Micheltorena St. What a travesty, when the community garden there was abolished. Now Cottage and its horrid housing project (where St. Francis once was) is asking to remove fourteen trees. The path should remain open.

Oh HOW I WISH we had an alternative hospital here. I HATE Cottage for ruining my neighborhood. And the "Apocalypse Now" helicopters have to go, too.

I want a map with all these lovely parkways marked in a different color. It would be so fun to try to find them all -- a treasure hunt!

Thanks so much, guys! I'm always looking for new places to take my dog for walks AND appreciate SB's beauty at the same time.

Urban Hikers - Thank you for the info on these paths. I guess I'll be using them A LOT now that the CHP have taken my vehicle away from me for no good reason. I'll have to use these paths to get to an attorney, a hearing, the storage yard where my car now resides, the CHP office, the police station, the DMV, the AAA ofiice, the grocery store and everywhere else that I have to get to. Unfortunately this is not going to help me with my work, because I need my car to make a living. I sure wish the CHP would release my car to me. This would be a great way for them to avoid further public humiliation.
