lets set some details straight. 97.5 frequency was known as KHTY and KMGQ during the mid 90's and early 00's---no KIST on the frequency. The original KRUZ call letters were on 103.3 until CMLS moved the format to hip hop in 04 and moved the station to Ventura.

The word on the street is that Cumulus is moving its remaining station 106.3 now known as Surf 106 to Ventura and leaving SB all together.

EMF has been in SB for several years (7?) broadcasting on a low power frequency. They have always wanted to increase their power to reach many more homes and 97.5 can be heard from Paso to Malibu. SB is NOT the target audience for EMF---the ENTIRE region is.

Bottom line--commercial radio as we know it today has a "leak in it" and the industry will disappear slowly over the next 10-15 years.

Hey everyone, just wanted to break it to you they are done; finished, ceasing to exist.

Cumulus (parent company) has been looking to sell KRUZ for a while, but they're super greedy - despite being the largest media conglomerate in the US - so no offer was enough for them. Until now.

Things went to Hell when Matt Stone quit. Writing was on the wall and he saw it.

Anyway, this is true they were traded to a Christian media company for another station in Oregon.

PS-if you love them, call (805) 965-9797 & tell them. The staff feels terrible, even though this was out of their control.

Hope the playlist is the same. Last weekend I could listen to KRUZ in the car both up and back from Arroyo Grande without changing the station once, new Dead Can Dance, new Van Morrison and much, much more, only breaking for ads once or twice.

As long as they promote Jesus' teachings and not the hate that right wingers have been flinging everywhere... at gays, at the poor, at democrats and others. I love KRUZ, personally I hope they don't change a thing.

Flicka for the win! Indeed, religion has no place in politics. And for the record, @765, I'm not a flaming liberal, I'm a flaming Libertarian.

765, since Jesus was a liberal why are so many conservatives hanging onto his robe tails? To me, politics should have nothing to do with religion.

@402 @REX I love seeing how SB's "tolerant" liberals immediately start spouting hate at the first mention of religion. And by the way, this idea that anything Christian is inherently "right-wing" is so far off base...Jesus was a liberal.

Personally, even though I'm not what you'd call super-religious, I do think that nowadays, Christian Rock seems to have more truly talented musicians than mainstream/pop. I look forward to having a choice other than KTYD's "all-Zeppelin-all-the-time" approach.

A local Christian radio station? Might do some of the readers good to thing to listen to glorious music for a change and teach them what it's about.

I'm tired of paying taxes too. Can I be a preacher in your church?
I'd give one minute sermons about the benefits of tax free religion.

6394.... Wouldn't it be a bummer if Carl managed to get word back down here to tell us we had it all wrong? Nobody would believe him or take him seriously, I bet.

WAIT.... $100Million income and no taxes???? That's it I'm founding my own religion and filing for 501(c)3.

I won't miss KRUZ; I don't listen to it much. If it goes to Christian radio, I might listen more.

Googled Educational Media Foundation ... they run the K-Love and Air 1 radio networks (they also have a distribution partnership with 600-pound gorilla Clear Channel).

EMF is not required by the FCC to have local community service studios since they are non-profit. K-Love's morning show is broadcast from Indianapolis. Not sure where Air-1 comes from. Air-1's wiki citation says they do a 30-minute local interest program once a week.

EMF is a religious non-profit 501(c)3 that pulled in over $100M in 2010.

Blah, more media concentration in the U.S. I'll continue to listen to KCRW.

There goes the neighborhood. Maybe they can change their call letters to KUKU.

They may not change their format - it's been that way for a while. Radio choices in this area are pretty insipid for the most part but I enjoy spinning the dial to catch the breaks in the sky of sameness. 97.5 yaps less and plays more music and is less repetitious than 101.7 (way too much yap and the yap is irritating) or 99.9 (smug yap). I like the variety of 93.1 (Jack FM) when I'm in the VC and can pick up their signal - they play a little bit of everything and rarely repeat themselves but have way too many commercials. Christian radio stations do not do well in this area and the new owners would take a big hit on listeners but that may not be an issue for them. Guess we'll hear what happens soon.

Well, Carl Schuele, who owned the station from 1970 until is death in the early 1990's, must be smiling down from heaven. He was a STRONG Christian leader in this community who loved to share his relationship with God.

interesting. hopefully they leave 97.5 alone. It's turned into a pretty decent playlist. And hopefully they don't combine efforts with Chic-fil-A. LOL.
