Ehat - there is no link to this on the main page. I had to go into the comments page to see the entry.

Me too. It looks like a Hollywood movie set.

Nice photos. Good-bye to old Hotel Californian (you forgot the "n" at the end of name).

We used to dance up a storm at Rocky Galenti's---live music. Remember the band "Mojo?"

Glad the facade is being kept, at least.

This is supposed to keep the us away from an eye sore until we get something actually built.....Great an empty wall

What's the deal with leaving one wall intact, just like the demolition on the old Bank of America Building going on Upper State right now too which is also leaving the front wall intact - does this get them around some zoning/planning rules?

Rocky Galenti's! Wow - that was a happening place. Back in the day...

The Bank of America building does not even have a yellow permit visible. What rules/requirements are they avoiding compared to doing a total four-wall demolition?

Someone likes to get up close and personal with their subjects. Good pics but me I like to add the long views for perspective.

Tennis bum if you click on the icon on the left, in this case 'citiz news' then the link comes up. I have had to try that in the past

If you leave a wall up it's a remodel not a new building requiring the lengthy approval process, EIRs etc etc. It's the same building but we can re build it better than it was .... it'll be the Bionic Hotel Californian.

One of the reasons I love SB is that so many people have "Pollyanna Syndrome." And we elected Das. And we elected Marty. And we elected Helene. And we elected Lois. And what is next?

316194 - what does that have to do with the price of eggs? Complete non-sequitur smear, not only at individuals but a large proportion of voters. Good grief.

New to the area. Where is the BOA that you speak of? I'm by Carl's Jr.

165- welcome to edhat :o)
I remember a house in my neighborhood that left a portion of a front wall, moved it to the corner of the lot, and completely rebuilt (not remodeled) the house. Is that the permit dance?

The steel beams make it look like an earthquake safe redo.

This is actually wonderfully to finally see. I always worried there were so many homeless living in it that it would accidentally burn or something awful. It's good to see the space be used.

This is the end of the expensive earthquake renovation requirement evaded by Bill Levy and allowed by his friends on the City Council. Council members and planners he would wine and dine at the El Paseo resteraunt during the approval process. It is also the death of the Coastal Commission requirement that this historical landmark and low cost hotel accomodations be preserved. Well it is being preserved, at least both walls of it! After all you would not want the developers to be required go back to planning and City Council after their "Entrada de Santa Barbara Project turned out to be a giant flop. They MIGHT have to actually plan something sensible.

When is City Hall going to be earth-quake retrofitted?

It's simple. It is a historic structure but most of it was structurally unsafe. So the facade will be saved and integrated with a new, safer structure keeping the vintage look to the front of the building.

I hope they do something cool with it and not just another tourist-friendly expensive hotel. Good LORD, that is the LAST thing we need here. How about something for the locals who actually LIVE and work here? I remember Rocky's. Loved that place. So fun. Remember all the cartoony charicatures on the walls?

Leaving one wall intact and completely rebuilding the entire rest of the building is known as a "California remodel." It's to get around some of our insane over-regulations.

I was one of the cartoony characters on the wall of Rocky Galenti's! The artist would go around the bar asking if anyone wanted their pic done. I still have my copy. He also added a saying from each "model." I am embarrassed to say that my comment was, "I am usually blonder than this!"

What is wrong with another tourist hotel? Santa Barbara has been a tourist destination since the late 1800s, a main basis of our economy. Fiesta was started to lure tourists here during the "off" season, winter resort at the time. The Potter Hotel on Cabrillo had 600 rooms, a VERY "high class" (expensive) place (burned down). Arlington Hotel (a victum of the 1925 earthquake) was also for the wealthy eastern tourists. It's what has long been done in Santa Barbara.

Agree, tourism is a huge part of our local economy and we could not be luckier. We should stop doing so many things that undermine this cash cow - like letting vagrants harass and scare tourists away and tell people not to come back to Santa Barbara.

With more hotels, there will be more business counter-weight to see we finally get people on city council who know what is best for this city and stop pandering to what has become the worst for our economic health.
