Well now, let's not jump the gun here...I cant tell from the blurry close-up if it has a long or short tail. I have seen personally & up close a juvenile Mtn Lion & it had same coloring as this(with a long tail of course). In the pic the stance seems to be more Bobcat-like, but WE WEREN'T THERE!!

Take a look at it's tail, and though it's markings are faint, it's clearly a Bobcat.

Judging from this angle it could be a pitbull... hard to tell by the lousy photo quality tho.

Bobcat. We live at the base of the Jesusita/Arroyo Burro Trail area and we have a huge resident bobcat...probably this guy.

Bobcat. Very common around here. People who are unfamiliar with them are so surprised to see them that they imagine they are much larger than they actually are.

Too big to be a bobcat???? Do you not see the bobbed tail in your own fuzzy photo? If anything it's too small to be anything BUT a bobcat. Too small to be a coyote, too small to be pit bull .... even Fiona could wrap her arms around it squealing "Hello Kitty".

A bobcat weighing at least 40 lbs was in my creekside back yard a couple of years ago...it dwarfed my 20 lb dog, who fortunately decided not to chase the big kitty. These felines can pack on some muscle & mass, and still leap atop a 5-ft fencepost with no effort!

I have seen 2 bobcats in the wild and was STUNNED at how large they were...yes, as big as a medium-large dog. I had always imagined them to be large housecat-size critters. This definitely looks like Bob to me.

Hi, I’m the OP. I saw this cat about 75 yards off. It was sitting there in the road looking at me when I noticed it. The photo sucks so badly because he was too far away to get a good shot with my cheepy camera by the time I managed to get it out of my pack, (when you zoom to an extreme it distorts the image). Sorry about that. I don’t claim to be an expert, but I have never seen a Bob Cat that big before. and like I said it was about the size of a medium hound. Bob Cat or Mountain Lion, who cares, it was a privilege to see it. Oh yeah, why don’t one of you guys volunteer some photography lessons – I sure could use some!

091: Surely you can't be serious! OP: Bobcats can be crazy big. Top ways to ID them from a cougar? The tail is 1/3 the length of the body in cougars. The bobcats have the color variations of spots & markings, where cougars are sandy & relatively uniform in color - EXCEPT for babies. Baby cougars look quite similar, in both marking and size, to bobcats. The pic could be either, btu I'd lean towards bobcat because the legs do look longer & more lean. Cougars are so muscular & stout in comparison. Fun thread, thanks for starting it! I laughed quite a few times at the various comments.

Mountain lions have a much longer lower-slung body and are generally tawny colored with fairly short hair. They also have a long symetrical tail and a smaller head in relation to their body. Bobcats tend to be multi-colored and stand taller than a mountain lion but are visibly shorter from head to tail. The large male bobcats often have large powertful back legs that make them appear to be taller in the rear and shorter in front. The small bushy or bobbed tail of the bobcat and much fuller whiskers sticking out from their cheeks are also dead giveaways.
