I usually--no make that ALWAYS--think your photos are flawless, and that's coming from a lifelong NatGeo junkie, but these are a touch over-worked. Is it the HDR thing, or extra contrast? I know it is tempting with all the fancy virtual tools out there. Most people lack the gift for seeing the beauty in its natural state that you have. Stick with that! No need to trick out your photos. You pictures are perfect as you see them, without too many special effects. Especially last night.

Way too much dynamic range in those images.

Try that shot in black and white and then do it in 1 bit monochromatic and you will get even a wierder looking photo.

Hey, people, take it easy on a old lady (me)....I don't pretend to be a good photographer, nor even a well trained one, I'm just having fun. If you want to be a critic, go to a Museum, or an Art Gallery. I rather like the vivid colors and super contrast....no one's holding a gun to yer head, if you don't like the images, just move on to the next post any time you see 'Aquaholic' in the title....I always include that in order to give fair warning....I certainly don't want to upset anyone.

I appreciate where you're coming from, Aquaholic, but I suggest that edhat is criticism as well as praise and one can learn from each. Usually, the criticism is valuable, more valuable than all the positive things one wants to hear about one's pictures. That's what I've learned here. I no longer submit many photos because there are so many with better cameras/lenses than I have and also I don't like being thin-skinned, stung by criticism. More power, though, to you and your photographic excursions.

If you don't want the criticism, don't post. Sometimes you post a little too often.

@251: I far prefer the photos to the criticisms. Maybe the critics are the ones who post too often.

Hey Aqua are you playing with GND filters here? I love that you managed to keep/find some light in the foreground while still exposing for the sky. 6089.... "too much dynamic range"??? It's a sunset shot: bright highlights and very dark shadows very close together. What's a photog to do with all that dynamic range? No shoot at sunset or with backlit sun??? 6027.... NatGeo is a very nice photo standard but not the only one.

Very stunning images, AQUAHOLIC. I assume you used HDR processing but that is not the point---photography is a medium with many elements under the control of the photographer. How those are used is the prerogative of the artist. I happen to like the way you chose to render the images.

I will not feed the trolls, I will not feed the trolls, I will not feed the trolls.... sorry, just trying to remind myself. No HDR involved here...just clever? post editing and fun with LR4. Thanks again for the encouragement, comments and yes, even the snark. *warning* I may be posting more photos today....

I enjoyed the images and also wondered if there was some sort of HDR or layering going on. Sounds like you just dodged and burned in LR? Its far better to put yourself out there and take a chance than to never show your work because someone might get bent out of shape. Consider the constructive critique, accept the compliments and ignore the ne-gators, they are just looking for someone to bite.

I read some of these comments (from non-paid) and thought, "better you than me." (Over the years I've gotten a few negative comments.) Thanks EMI, thanks good advice. And like Aqua, I need to keep saying, "I will not feed the trolls."

Oops.... I guess I'm the snark who challenged the "too much dynamic range" remark. I couldn't help it .... it was so misinformed I couldn't let it slide. I mean good cameras can capture 5-7 stops of light while the eye can see up to 22 stops of light. That is we can see 3 times as much dynamic range than a camera can capture. To complain that an image has too much of what it can't possibly have is total silliness. If to challenge that makes me a Snark ... a snark I proudly be. Good night Andrew Langley
