That's a start.

How about we figure out how many BILLION$ would be saved if we stopped supported the undocumented workers with food debit cards, free medical at ER's, free education, subsidized housing, the list goes on and on...
BUT we won't hear ONE politician mention it, because it's politically uncorrect---- Let's therefore go after people who work 30 years in the same occupation and have PAID into their retirement.

315237 - have you done any factual research on that?

How about we save billions of dollars on the outrageous CEO salaries that have skyrocketed exponentially over the last 30 years, while the rest of us - whose productivity is the highest in the world - have salaries that have flat-lined.

I think you are looking at the wrong end of the scale - immigrant workers get the lowest pay of all, and a lot of services would come to a screaming halt if they lost their jobs.

FACT: Look what happened in Alabama:
"EPI Vice President Ross Eisenbrey has shown that employment growth in Alabama since passage of HB 56 is only one-seventh of the national average. The United States has regained about 43 percent of the jobs lost at the bottom of the recession; Alabama has only recovered about 9 percent of the jobs it lost. Eisenbrey also notes that personal income per worker fell in the two quarters following the enactment of HB 56, while it remained constant in neighboring states. Some businesses in the state have been hard hit by the loss of immigrant workers. Clearly, HB 56 has not helped solve Alabama’s jobs crisis."

This "saving" disguises the fact that in order to get this "concession" the Ounty had to promise this union three years worth of wages, comprising a significant extension of their contract. Here are the related documents

I'm with 245P. We don't need no stinkin' firefighters. Last I checked, garden hoses were cheap.

Firefighters spend the majority of the time shining tires and doing bench presses in the fire house. Then when an ambulance request goes out, they fire up the 50 foot truck and waste our money. Oh and don't forget that every time you see them in the grocery store buying all that grub for a huge dinner, it's YOUR MONEY!

To Mr 256... Firefighters spend a majority of time training to prepare for all the required emergencies they have to respond to. They are MANDATED to train in all facets of the job.
Also, Firefighters use THEIR OWN MONEY when they are shopping for food... Do you seriously think that the taxpayers buy their meals? LOL!
You are so uninformed, it's almost not even worth posting this.
Why don't all of you haters form your own Volunteer Fire Brigade if you are so anti- Go for it!

I'm with 268: firefighters pay for their own meals.

Speaking of food, why do we, as nation, give out so much free food when being overweight is the number one health problem facing this country?  And as far as WIC and other food hand-outs on the taxpayer dime, my question is this: How is it one can have multiple children and yet be so poor that he/she can't afford food? Is it because the person  bought that shiny new truck or car? ( Don't believe? No problem, just spend 15 mins around any grocery store.)

If you can afford to buy gas, you can afford food. Where the heck is the auditing of these programs? All this wouldn't be a great concern except that our national debt is in the same ballpark as some of the EU countries that are in financial trouble. Will we fix the system before we implode?

256 and 311-They buy it with their own money? WELL WHO PAYS THEIR SALARIES? HELLO!!!

314- With that logic, I guess everything I buy is with my employer's money. I don't know why he even bothers giving me a paycheck.

Thank you for making the world so much more understandable for me.

Why all the vitriol towards firefighters? No, seriously why? Does anyone but them really know what a typical day is like for them Does anyone but them know what their training schedules are like or how rigorous it is? I don't. I am just glad they are there just in case.....

Does anyone know what its like to remove an abused child from a home and in the middle of the night attempt to find a safe place for him/her? Does anyone know what its like to untie the noose from an adolescent who has tried to hang herself in custody?- workers public and private- perform countless risky, tragic and life-saving tasks that the public hears little about. Some have taken severe pay cuts during this economic downturn, others not so much. No one group of civil servants should be elevated (or elevate themselves) in a way that denigrates or degrades the value and commitment of other groups. That is not what Labor day is about.
You all deserve respect and gratitude, and fairness in compensation.

I can't believe the vitriol being directed at firefighters in a county that's seen its fair share of major fires in the past few years.

The far-right anti-union, anti-tax disciples of Beck and Limbaugh don't speak for me.

If fire-fighters cared about public safety they would be mounting massive public service campaigns to prevent wild fires, since all of our major fires recently were started by foolish people choices made in the middle of Red Alert fire seasons.

Instead fire-fighters spend their time going door to door campaigning for pro-union political candidates that will jack up their salaries, benefits and perks while our public awareness about fire prevention gets thrown under the bus.

When the only time we hear from our fire fighters (besides election time) is after the fact when they get trotted out for the routine "hero parade" for doing the jobs we are paying them handsomely to do in the first place, they need to rethink their relationship to the community and its real public safety needs.

I always get a chuckle from the peanuts in the gallery who in the effort to save a penny will expose themselves, mostly everyone else, to unacceptable risk. And be the first to sue when the risks finally do affect them.
