maybe you can highlight one dog and one cat a week from a local rescue operation. I do enjoy the pampered pet series, however, our local animals in need could use a little love too! Just sayin'....

047. Great idea. Maybe even a separate section for rescue cat and dog of the week. What do you think Edhat? I would have have put that in the survey it I thought about it my self. My beasts are all rescues and eventually I will get arround to submitting then, but I think giving exposure for the homeless pets is a great use of this forum. People fall in love over the internet all of the time, why not give a voice to the felines and canies looking for love. Also maybe a pet lost and found? Good chance the urban hikerss will run into them. They are everywhere.

Back in the days when it was a real newspaper, the News-Press featured a Pet of the Week every Saturday. These pets were adoptable cats or dogs from local animal shelters. NP photographer Ray Borges told me that in all the years he'd been taking pictures of these pets, every single one of them wound up being adopted. Which is a great track record, considering that these pets very often weren't the cutest of the bunch, just loving dogs and cats who needed homes. I think an Adoptable Dog and Cat of the Week photo column is a great idea for Edhat.

Absolutely the best idea. Go with it Edhat. Much better than pictures of animals who already have a great loving home.

Great idea for Adoptable Cat/Dog of the week. I never look at the Pet of the Week - those stories and photos seem more suited for your own Facebook page. Go for it Ed!

I 'vote' for both kinds of stories as there frequently tales of edhatters adopting from the street or shelters which send an important message. They remind us of our personal connection to animal companions and why the mutual bond of caring is so important.

I echo others here. Make the Cat & Dog of the Week adoptable pets, not ones that currently enjoy great homes. EdHat could still do an occasional feature, say, "My Loving Pet," where the owner submits pictures and a 50 word or less story.

To 190P - I have had dogs most of my life and have never never never left a package behind. I always carry shop towels and a plastic bag for quick pickup and disposal. I think you are preaching to the choir here. As for cats, which I have also had, they are not walked on a leash. It really is not always possible to pick-up after them. But -- my experience with cats says that once they learn to use a litter box, they come back in the house to use the facilities.

Since Edhat isn't a newspaper and can't assign anyone to find weekly adoptable pets, maybe an Edhat reader with a camera and a little time on his/her hands would volunteer to undertake running out to the pet shelter(s) once a week and find Pets Of The Week, like Roger does with the Scanner Reports. Someone might want to run this past the Edhat staff and see if they'd go for it. It seems Edhat readers would certainly like this. Dan? You're certainly good at photographing pets. Any voluneers? Bueller?
