I have two bats that live behind the shutters on my home in the SY Valley. Leave them alone. They do more good than harm. Ignore them and let them do their job. Yes, they do carry rabies but stay out of their way and they will not bother with you.

Bats can have the rabies virus, but not become sick from it, making it difficult to determine from a live bat whether it's a carrier. I love bats, have worked professionally with them and so I keep current on my rabies vaccine. They are wonderful animals, indeed, but some SB bats are rabies positive so just don't contact them and they can be enjoyed without fear!

Thank you for the info on the bat, you educated me. Great picture.

The OPs post should have stated that bats can be a carrier of rabies not that they" often carry rabies". A statement such as this perpetuates the unnecessary fear of these amazing animals. Bats eat Mosquitos, which are far more likely to carry and spread viruses.

Lucky you! I put up a bat house (state-of-art one, made by a friend, all to specifications) at my house, years and years ago. After five years of no bats, I "donated" the house to a friend, who lives near a creek.

20 years later, and he never had any bats in that luxury condo bat house, that I we know of. I see the Myotis flitting and diving (from my front yard), nearly every night.

Wish I could have bats around here. The guano is great fertilizer for the garden, too.

Bats are awesome! Great photo.

I enjoy watching them flutter about every evening. Kind of an evening ritual here to look for bats off the back porch.
