Thanks 899. Of course it is good to have drunks off the streets, but it is a dangerous slope of transgressing the individual's rights for the rights of others, in this case searches without warrants. Also, we get used to the government poking around, going on fishing expeditions. I am glad the rules are tough, that lines have been drawn. Robert Frost said something like: "If society suits you comfortably enough, you call it freedom."

The announcements from Sheriff's Dept for Goleta area DUI Checkpoints don't specify the location - they just say "undisclosed location." Is the Sheriff required to disclose the location? I like that personally. I don't drink, but have been stuck behind one of these checkpoints and they are a pain in the rear - if I know where and when, I'll avoid that area. Do drunks think in advance and avoid these checkpoints? Do you think drunk college kids read edhat or think in advance of anything?

The only people that have a problem with these checkpoints are people that are doing something wrong and don't want to get caught. Of course the officers will cite people that are doing illegal things, even if they are not drunk. Driving without insurance, registration, a valid license, a gun on the seat, no seat belt, etc. should all be ticketed for. I would rather them generate revenue to keep our streets policed than sit back & let a bunch of degenerates drive! These stings don't just catch drunks, they catch illegals too! I am happy when they lose their cars because they are less likely to hit someone and run without their car.

What's amazing is the utter lack of knowledge of our constitution. I find it incredibly sad that many of you would rather have draconian law enforcement over liberty and freedom... "Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither" - Ben Franklin

Wait. These generate revenue in addition to getting drunk and unlicensed drivers off the road? Awesome! Win win! Thanks for the info - I am awake now!

Why are checkpoints bad things? It was reported here on Edhat that law enforcement recently caught ONE HUNDRED DUIs over 11 days. That's what we should be worried about. Our fellow man is most probably a drunk driver who is out to harm, maim or kill us.

They HAVE to post the location? Crazy - another instance where common sense has gone out the window! Why do people consistently defend individual rights at the expense of the communities they live in? Amazing.

314839 - we are paying the lowest taxes in four decades. From 1993-2000, when the taxes were just 4 points higher, the poor did better and the rich did better, and 23 million jobs were created, and the deficit was heading to be completely eliminated. Please do not use the tax increase boogeyman, when the tax cuts after 2001 caused the biggest hardship to this country in decades. Also, please follow the results from these checkpoints - they are quite astonishing and a cause for concern.

I disagree. DUI checkpoints help find and arrest drunk drivers. Why is that wrong?

Teacher's pension fund isn't the General Fund, you just contradicted yourself.

Instead of "DUI" checkpoints, they should be renamed "RG" checkpoints. Revenue Generating. It's not "for your safety", its for the money. WAKE UP! Just like tax increases are "for the children". No, the tax increases will go into the under funded teacher pension fund. Source: “Despite endorsing Brown's measure, (California School Boards Association) leaders said they ‘want to make it clear to the public that the governor's initiative does not provide new funding for schools. Instead, it bolsters the General Fund with new revenue.’” (Kevin Yamamura, “School boards endorse both major California tax hike initiatives,” Sacramento Bee, 5/22/12)

(1) Checkpoints cannot be set up at random. (2) The local district attorney's office must be aware of the checkpoint. (3) The police officers who set up the checkpoint must have a specific pattern for stopping cars and must not deviate from that pattern. (4) The decision to implement a checkpoint must not be made out of thin air, but should be a measure in response to a demand. (5) Police officers who decide to set up a checkpoint must adequately inform drivers that the checkpoint will be in place. (6) As drivers approach the sobriety checkpoint, they should be able to see that the police are present. (7) If the police intend to send drivers to a test site for chemical testing, there must be an easy and fast route from the checkpoint to the test site. (8) Police officers must be able to successfully manage the checkpoint without unreasonably halting the flow of traffic. (9) The public must be notified aggressively and well in advance of any checkpoint.

I was wondering the same thing. Doesn't it just serve to warn drunk drivers which streets to avoid?

Why do they announce the location? I have recently moved to Santa Barbara. Is it a requirement by law to announce the checkpoint?
