"The subject was Christian Ariel Hernandez, age 19, a former student and Eastside Gang associate."

Since the report describes him as a former student and not a graduate, I'm going to assume he's a drop out. Bummer dude.

So once again, we will pay for this (fill in the blank) to be tried, sentenced and jailed over and over again...
This guy would be a perfect candidate for taking out his aggressions on breaking rocks in a quarry- but the ACLU and our soft justice system will get him a bunk,TV, weight lifting and hanging out with the homies instead...

Why do we feel the need to have cops on campus? Seems like a waste of $ to me.

Excellent work by the police.

Unfortunately we will never hear about the outcome/sentencing.

There is no follow-up because we and the media all know what is going to happen in this town. He will get off with probation, continue to commit crime and cost us more money.

Another grateful anchor baby giving back to the community who so poorly educated him and provided his family with work and free medical care.

314093: Wasted $$ - the name of the game, necessary to rationalize > budget every year. 8 cop cars and 2 fire engines for 4 hours for a suspected suicide who wasn't home a few weeks ago. Gotta pump those stats.

Gotta do something about those marijuana dispensaries selling drugs on school property.

Nothin to see here, folks; just the result of another set of parents who failed to properly raise their offspring.

021 is the only one with a thought provoking comment. The rest are "holier than thou", mean comments. Do you REALLY know what his background is? Who his parents are? WHat they have or have not tried?? What a harsh, judgemental, self-righteous group of commentors.

all of these comments are making me sad.

wouldn't you say that this is a person that needs our help the most? why is his life headed in this direction? how did we, as a community, facilitate this happening-- whether we realize it or not?

this is not to say this young man has to take responsibility as well, but all of this discussion about getting a free education, medical, 'anchor baby', leads me to ask how you would be able to help him CONTRIBUTE to our community rather than just judge him for this incident.

back to my point-- this is a kid that needs community support the most.

Drug laws don't affect drug use. We need teachers on campus, not cops. Drug laws only support law enforcement. Putting this kid in jail is the best way to brand him and train him as a lifelong criminal and won't make it harder for kids to get drugs.

It's said that history repeats itself but every darn day! This isn't a new scene. This kid wanted to make fast money and not work for his money. No sympathy here. Get it together parents!

How pathetic that we marginalize our Hispanic brethren and then complain when they go rogue or step out of the mainstream where they are so unwelcome to begin with. Seriously, for folks so high and mighty about others being held responsible for their actions, we sure don't practise what we preach. But I guess racism requires no integrity or honor or rational thinking either.

BTW, SCEPTIC, selling drugs on campus is not cool regardless of how easy they are to obtain off campus.

I am not saying anything in particular about this case but in general students fail and so do schools because parents just don't care or don't become involved in their student's education. Teachers can't do it all. They say it takes a village but realize the parents and teachers and staff and other family are the village. We are all responsible for helping our children get through school and become successful adults.

"Mass incarceration on a scale almost unexampled in human history is a fundamental fact of our country today -- perhaps the fundamental fact, as slavery was the fundamental fact of 1850. In truth, there are more black men in the grip of the criminal-justice system -- in prison, on probation, or on parole -- than were in slavery then. Over all, there are now more people under 'correctional supervision' in America -- more than six million -- than were in the Gulag Archipelago under Stalin at its height." --

- Adam Gopnik, "The Caging of America"

I am stunned at these comments. I've got a kid at that school and I AM GLAD the cop arrested someone who was TRESPASSING on campus with intent to sell drugs. Stop already with the excuses for his behavior and how he needs some community luvin'. By all means, get your butt over there and give him some. But my concern is the safety of my kid, and her ability to attend school on a campus that's drug and thug-free. Let's at least keep the ones trying to go to school safe and drug free, shall we, rather than excusing and coddling those who would threaten that.

We had 3 go to SBHS - They were faced with the Ceto kids with tons of cash - drugs every where - as involved parents - we kept most of it at bay - no reason a 19 year old should even be on campus let alone with drugs for sale -

for U nay sayers - my son had 3 friends committed their senior year into rehab - court ordered - DUI's - crack - Auto theft- strong arm robbery - and these are white kids - PS we still are involved in volunteering at SBHS and enjoy the kids - if fact my wife is in Beverly Hills tonight photographing the football team - she then sends them to smug mug and the kids can down load them for free..........Game next Friday - Great team this year - instead of sniping go and volunteer - give back to the community -
