179, Rolling Thunder is the cross-country ride to D.C.; the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial. It's motorcycles.

Of all the motorcycles, harleys have got to be the worst. Stupid engine design for that useless sound. Whatever does it for them I guess though right. Would be nice if we didn't have to get an earfull.

@081P: The difference is that the motorcyclists don't shoot through red lights, block intersections, break myriad other traffic laws or tie up traffic the way that hordes of "organized" bicyclists like to do.

012: Thanks for the info. I'm surprised - 80 dB is plenty loud, but it was OK with OSHA for a full 8-hour day the last time I was an engineer in a class 100 cleanroom, I would have guessed higher max dB for bikes. I think SBPD still doesn't have a dB meter.

So Rolling Thunder is universally praised, and this ride, whatever it was, is criticized? Why? Patriotism? Let's be good hosts to foreign tourists. There was a big ride through my part of town about a month ago, it was "cold country" folk (sorry, I forgot which country) who rented Harleys and were headed to Sturgis. They even had support cars & a trailer. I didn't see any posts about them. Have you critics been disturbed by the riders in the pic here? Criticize the single Harleys, sport bikes, and the cursed cheap bicycle or whatever it is with a 2 stroke motor that cruises town for noise, not these cruisers.

OP here - I did see one of the riders putting something away in one of the bikes, and she and another fellow were speaking French, so the theory of Europeans on a tour makes sense. I just thought they were striking, all lined up like that (the bikes, not the Europeans, ha ha). (Also, I'm glad another Edhatter got photos of the military boats and crew -- it was an awesome sight!)

A good bet that these are Rental Harley's from Eagle Rider with German (or other Euro's) touring the west....

A noise limit of 88 decibels applies to motorcycles manufactured after 1969 and before 1973; 86 decibels applies to motorcycles manufactured after 1972 and before 1975; 83 decibels applies to motorcycles manufactured after 1974 and before 1986; 80 decibels applies to motorcycles manufactured after 1985.

Interestingly, there is NO law about a Motorcyle being too noisy. This is from the Smog Referee that also clears tickets for excessively noisy cars/trucks.
