What a shame we can't have gas stations like that now. The current structure is beyond hideous.

That's a real nice photo Bob. It sure was a simpler time.

The road is the Coast Highway, going toward Santa Barbara it went in front of the Montecito Country Club golf course, up Salinas, turned left at Cacquic (sp?), then up State.

Notice the train crossing the photo just beyond Olive Mill Road. I'll bet they even pumped your gas, checked your oil, washed your windows, filled your tires and probably charged about 19 cents per gallon for Ethyl...

It looks like te photo of the Coast Highway in front of the Montecito Inn was taken circa 1930 based on the automobiles visible. The Montecito Inn opened in 1928. The parkway between Olive Mill and San Ysidro opened in 1938. The Spanish Revival gas station is similar to the Barnsdale Rio Grande gas station in Elwood which opened in 1929.

When was the photo taken? Must have been way before the freeway construction as it looks like that is some kind of structure where the on-ramp now is. Really nice to see.

@935
Yep, looks like the Montecito Inn on the right, looking towards Olive Mill Rd. and up what is now the SB freeway on ramp.
The service station became a Union 76...
Worked there when Rick owned it in the 80's

Thanks for the old photo. It looks unrecognizable. Is it facing Olive Mill rd? Is it the Montecito Hotel building on the end?

Tennis must have been big back then... four tennis courts?

Interesting to see a layout of the property, I've always wondered about it as driving by today, its hard to appreciate it for what it was.
