Im surprised it took this long for someone to blame it on a pitbull. These are the same people that look like they saw a ghost and grab their dogs when i walk my pitbull by, as she wags her tail and couldn't care less about you or your dog. I love the reaction i get when i see a person about to do that and i quickly grab my dog as if im scared for my dogs safety and say that their breed of dog is dangerous. it's like they just found out the world is flat.. priceless!

@377 I understand your frustration and I hope you'll understand my anxiety as well. My old dog was rolled and nailed by a leashed pit bull at Wilcox. I do feel tense when I see them. Hope your dog knows it's a joke because otherwise you may be unwittingly communicating an anxiety your dog will feel a need to defend. There are more helpful ways to make your dog a good ambassador for its kind. Mocking those who fear it is not one.

377, your dog may be the nicest dog possible, but many or not. Many dogs who attack wag their tail beforehand. A wag can be happy, but it can also be a sign of dog arousal preceding an aggressive outburst. Our old-fashioned notion of a dog wagging it's tail is it's happy. This is projecting our human emotions on a dog. Wagging really means the dog is experiencing heightened intensity mentally. Those of us with little dogs don't care to see which direction the building adrenalin goes...a goofy smooch, or a throat grab.

My little one got rolled at Tucker's Grove by a gang of shepherd types. The owners just stood around and watched while I jumped into a pack of 10 shepherds and hounds separating the dogs from my wee one. It's not the dog's problem; it's usually the owner who has no clue how to handle their dog. I thought the IQ of the TG owners was pretty low. I also thought that my Common Sense Quotient was low, just to be fair to the dumb ones. Ellings is usually the best park for a dog or its owner to go. The other dog owners tend to be friendlier and more responsible dog owners than the Tucker's Grove owners and the EP dogs are usually on good behavior. I hope everybody in the incident hasn't been hurt and things are calm at EP.

455, yes my dog is a sweetheart and is trained very well. I know that my dog looks very intimidating so i understand why people get scared but sometimes it's just so annoying when people judge her. She is my girl so i can take offense but 99% of the time i just smile and say she's friendly. I've had her out and other dogs have bitten her and while bleeding from her snout and still wanting to play, the owners usually grab their dog and rush off giving me a look as if it was my dogs fault.

is it illegal to stab a dog in self defense? i punted an off leash dog that was attacking my leashed pit bull while walking in our neighborhood once. don't think i'd ever stab a dog unless it was attacking me or i felt my dogs life was truly in danger. i never carry a knife with my anyways so it's not a decision i'll ever have to make.

Look for the tail wagging, but also how stiff the dog is, is the hair up along its back, is he moving in to sniff at the butt or holding still? The problem is if my dog is being stiff yanking her out of there just reinforces the negativity of the meet. Often the yank is the start of a growl and snap situation. So I tell my dog in a high play voice, let's go and then I move off in another direction and she always follows. Then she gets praise and a treat to reinforce the positiveness of the meet. She's gone from being unfriendly to spending days at Dioji's so I'm happy with her progress.

I know a family who had a Pit Bull for over 8 years. I was never afraid of it when I visited. It was a beloved family pet. The owners took great care of it. It woke up one morning on the wrong side of the bed and ripped off half of one of the family members forehead/scalp.

Thank you for the reporting Rodger... from an Elings Park Member and a Pit Bull owner. I saw Anthony from AC coming out of EP North at around 9:30am while on my way to EP South. One note for clarification, the attack was at Elings North (where the gliders take off and the bicyclers have trails) which is not as patrolled for membership. I think it's a bit safer than the myriad of dogs on the Wilcox and Hendry's but the dogs are not as well-known as the dogs who frequent the ball & soccer fields and upper Elings areas. I hope to hear good news about the poor dog who suffered from what is surely human-stupidity.

The only time my pit bull has ever attacked another dog was when a German Shepard came charging growling at the kids but she was just protecting the kids and the other dog was showing obvious signs of aggression and when the owner I explained the situation and he apologized and told me it wasn't the first time. I think I'm more scared of German Shepard than any other dog
