I just left the sale and what bargains with everything half price and air conditioning made the hunt for that special book even more fun. With bags of books, I will be set for the year ahead.

I stopped in at the book sale yesterday, Thursday, and there are many great books still available and I heard that on Sunday, books are 1/2 priced. At already reasonable prices, Sunday will be really busy, so I think heading there today and Saturday might be a good idea. Especially with the forecast of warm weather, that a/c will feel mighty good. I keep thinking that a year of reading ahead means I should stock up. Thanks, Planned Parenthood volunteers for doing all this work so that we can find great bargains.

I have been at the sale several times since opening night and it's fun meeting friends who are shopping for bargains, too. Lots of children looking for books to call their own and it is encouraging to know that they are learning to love books. The sale goes on until next Sunday and I figure I'll be back in case I have overlooked some things I want because they are adding books daily as more space becomes available. And, the air conditioning has felt wonderful while I shop.

Dealers can't come in before the sale, but often come with a helper so they get a lot done in a short amount of time. Do come the first night as there is a festive atmosphere, but if you miss opening night, there are lots of books out every day and the volunteers are very helpful getting bags for you, if you forget to bring your own, helping you find categories of interest and finding that illusive title on your list. It is an amazing sale of books in excellent condition, and the specials category has some amazing copies of out of print and rare books.

No way someone gets to buy books before the sale. Dealers come in the same time as everyone else. If he was already leaving when you arrived you must have been a little late.

I became less of a fan after going to the opening night reception some years ago and seeing a local dealer there at the outset with boxes of books on a hand-truck already moving them out. I guess there's a pre-pre-sale?

This is such a great book sale! They have something for everyone and the prices can't be beat. We go almost every year. Come prepared with some boxes to take home the book treasures you might find.

And parking is always free for the book sale. Bring your reading lists and enjoy finding books in categories from art to genealogy to travel, foreign languages, children's and special, rare books, too. Lots of books on California and Santa Barbara.

Opening Night Reception 5:00 - 9:00 Thursday 9/20 (wine & great snacks) costs $25. The rest of the time admission is free.
