We should post those 72 hour shark siting warning signs at the Franklin Community center during events like these.

Strange choice of weapons. I bet they were headed to the Garden. I don't blame someone for calling it in though. Scary stuff going on in that neighborhood.

The Community Garden, which costs about $50/year to join, is not at the Franklin Center, on Montecito, but a block and a half away on Yanonali.

It's a different world we live in. Sad if they were carry shovels and pitch forks to harm someone and even sadder that we see someone with something so inocent and we think gang activity.

Are Eastsiders taking to gardening and developing a green thumb? Better than 'banging and coercing youngsters to join them. I am not saying all of ES is bad, but if they would get together as a community, get to know each other, and have events like building community gardens and having volunteers offer after-school programs and get-togethers like the Mesa does, they could turn it around. Create a place that is safe and where learning and volunteering are accredited. Don't rely on the cops as everyone is hush-hush in fear of retaliation, celebrate your heritage and maybe have a BBQ get-together on the weekends with some music, beautify your neighborhood, garden together, do your own neighborhood watch program.

311221: I respect your observation, but noting it's a different population here than on the Mesa. However, the Community Garden at Yanonali is used; there are regularly large parties in Yanonali Park; the Franklin East Side Library is heavily used; and I think there are volunteers at Franklin and Adelante Schools (although the test rates remain abysmal.) The Milpas Community Association does a serious outreach into the neighborhoods (note: there is no one single ES neighborhood, perhaps another difference from the Mesa.) As for the "your heritage"? Which one? That's one of the problems here, the assumption it is all Latino. Probably the only point in common (and another distinction from the Mesa) is that it is generally low income with houses low cost (for Santa Barbara, that is.) How to celebrate that would be a challenge.
