Aaron, before you go online and make a total fool out of yourself, why don't you do a little research and find out exactly what is going on. Try googling "Deckers" and "152000-square-foot headquarters".

Yes I agree, there is too much open office space, who cares if they want a new headquarters, remodel across the street. The ppl that work there are kind of uppity anyways.

414 hit the nail on the head, however i COMPLETELY agree with the need for a kart track in goleta. the space that was occupied by the chrysler dealership would be perfect for a kart/supermoto track.

I thought that area was a protected wetlands migration corridor.... There should be a percentage vacancy (not above a certain percent) before more new construction can occur. Builders/developers will always want to build... pave paradise- put up a parking lot. If we don't learn from history, we're bound to continue repeating....

435P: agree completely. We should also limit the amount of milk you can purchase to 1qt per week.

I think we should be thankful that Deckers wanted to STAY in Goleta... They could have moved out of the area - leaving people without jobs, taking their money with them... I'm sure there are other things we can complain about besides a new building going up.

There is a shortage of large venue properties in Goleta. There are a standard amount of smaller vacant office type properties. There is no huge surplus of anything property wise in this area. It's not a bad thing -Goleta now has a strong tech/mfg base - it will only get more robust. And some of us are making due quite nicely with the space we already have.

414, I remember when Clenet tried doing the big move from making their cars at an airport hanger to making cars at a big new building on Hollister in Goleta. Big mistake, the building stood empty for years afterwards when Clenet folded under the weight. I hope Deckers isn't making the same mistake.

@435P- Good plan. We'll just tell them they can't build so they'll leave town to some place that will let them build...

Excessive? Are you kidding me? #1 Deckers is staying here and moving into a 152,000 square foot building on that lot. #2 and MOST IMPORTANTLY. Goleta's unemployment rate is 3.6%, no not 13.6%, 3.6%. Goleta is growing, not laying off people. More space means more business in Goleta which has become home to manufacturing companies despite the economy.

To those that want go cart tracks and want other uses for the land, I suggest you buy the land and then you can do with it as you wish. Otherwise pipe down as the property owner who bought, paid for, and maintains property should do with it as they want. I just love it how some want to tell others what they should and should not do with their own property.

Go Deckers!!! I am looking forward to their new HQ and the jobs that stay in Goleta!

Seriously. The more businesses (particualrly high tech) that come into the area, whether or not they build new buildings, has a huge, positive, ripple effect. More money for the local restaurants / stores, more need for local hotels, more use of the airport, leading to more airlines / routes into SBA. Etc, etc.

The only downside is traffic. I work next door to the new Deckers construction, and recently the traffic going to the 101 at rush hour on Los Carneros is ridiculous. This problem will only get worse, and I'm sure the folks at city hall are aware they have a problem on their hands.

How about a new Chevron refinery to replace the 100-year old Richmond one that just burned? Lower gas prices, good Union jobs, state of the art equipment for very little pollution output, and lots of fresh local tax revenues.

458P, no one was saying the owner of whatever land you're referring to needs to do anything. we were both observing the lack of a local kart track, i was merely suggesting that the old chrysler dealership they tore down is an ideal location due to it's distance from residential or commercial development and the fact that it's directly under the airport flight path which will prevent another structure from replacing it in the future and exceed. believe me, if i was a trust fund baby and not someone working full time just to make rent and pay off the loans i had to take out to get a decent education, i would certainly enjoy buying land and operating a recreational facility for my community to enjoy.

Some number of years ago, there was a kart track on land near the Goleta Valley Health Club. A child was hurt and the owners were sued and went bankrupt. Insurance for things like kart tracks is prohibitive. Until there is some kind of tort reform, we will all be held hostage by the lawyers and no one will take the chance on loosing everything by opening things like kart tracks.

As others have already stated, Deckers staying in Goleta is ideal for Goleta. The new campus will look amazing, reflecting the culture. Deckers intention is to make a headquarters that it can stay at for a very long time. If they didn't get that plot, then they would have had to have left Goleta.

Renovating the other buildings is not an option. Currently Deckers rents 3 buildings. Renting more doesn't really help the problem. Increased freeway traffic is not an issue, Deckers primary office is already off of fairview, so any traffic they'd cause is already there, just 1 mile over.

I am reminded of Circon who had one huge banner year (front page of Forbes) and proceeded to build the large monstrosity at 6500 Hollister Ave. Within the next year they struggled, were acquired by their competitor who closed them down and moved the jobs out of Goleta. The building sat empty a long time too, that has changed with time. Hopefully Deckers is not over extending itself and depending entirely on growth projections from the experts as well. I wish them luck.

@497: I respectfully disagree with your "Traffic Study".
Traffic on the Freeway is not the issue that @465 pointed out. It's the traffic at & around on-and off-ramps PLUS the traffic at the already-busy intersections in the area. Traffic at Fairview has nothing to do with it.
However, I commend Deckers for staying in the area & not out-sourcing jobs overseas.

474 you said it right, but you forgot one thing....SB invites all the transients in to take over our city so Golets doesn't have to deal with it! Could you please build a couple Rescue Missions and take the load off SB?

Goleta, you are doing it right....more businesses, more jobs, more tax revenue AND your housing market will recover long before Santa Barbara's.

552, I'm really getting weary of the whole "SB invites homelessness" thing. If you'd care to explain that theory (without abject rhetoric, hyperbole or just plain misinformation or doublespeak) then by all means, do.

Until then, I'll dismiss comments like yours with a huge vat of salt; until people are willing to deal with the real issues without falling for the political lines that other people spoon feed them, we're never going to get anywhere on this subject.

Ummm... it's sort of untrue that there's a whole lot of vacant commercial space for rent in Goleta. It has to be zoned right, the right size, and the right price for the potential tenants. Everything I've found is zoned wrong (retail or office only, and we want mfg w/ limited retail), &/or is too big or too costly. It's got to be the right space for the kind of business that needs to use it -- security, zoning, amenities, access, parking, etc. I'm happy that Deckers decided that they'd stay in Goleta and build what they needed. Perhaps their vacated space at the airport could be rented by something airport related again? [Hint to property owners. If it's sitting vacant for a long time, you might consider lowering the rent, subdividing it, improving the security or access, reviewing the zoning, etc.]

No. This is a bad idea. Many times I have seen happy people around town freely wearing Deckers flip flops while they merrily ride their cruiser bicycles. These people are relaxed and happy but come on people, safety first. We must be cautious at all times, some one could get a toe caught in their bicycle chain and then what? This is a nightmare. Someone could get hurt. No. Not here. Deckers is up to no good and they must go.

Goleta is the future, Santa Barbara is the past. Goleta is building to attract jobs and companies, and they have a low rate of unemployment. Santa Barbara is built out, with ridiculously difficult building standards, with boards that make arbitrary and political decisions about your project. The only thing Santa Barbara is building is high-density housing for the poor and homeless. Goleta will have jobs and suburban homes. Santa Barbara will be for the rich in the hills, and the enviros, hippie set, poor and homeless in its downtown core. The only jobs in SB are government and tourism. Which is the progressive city? If you measure in terms of progress, it's Goleta.

@435P If you're still reading this thread----thanks for mentioning the wetlands. How sad for everyone that so many people think it is okay to concrete what is left of our precious wetlands.

Every time I pass the construction site (via public transpo), I feel bad about the ignorance that allowed this project to move forward. We need more wetlands, open space, trees, and green areas. Period. Goleta is now being ravaged by development. Heaven help us all. (Not religious, but you get my meaning.)

NO! When jobs are a plenty in this county, I work more. When construction co have reached there limit of jobs, they don't bid as low on the next job, so there are more jobs for the next company to bid low and get a job. This country would stop dead in its tracks if we did not have people to build and fix infrastructure.

The Deckers development is a large part of an even larger development encompassing the entire property from Hollister to the Mammoth Movers operation on the southern edge, and all the way west to the eastern edge of the properties fronting Storke. The former Delco HQ is being remodeled, added to and converted to use as corporate HQ for another Goleta-based high tech company that has outgrown its current space. The remaining parcels on the site will be occupied by the City of Goleta as a facilities yard, UCSB Facilities Management, and other lessees. The developer is NOT going to build on spec; all buildings will be constructed only when contracts have been signed for long-term occupancy.

And yes, the existing wetland, which occupies approximately 20% of the entire site, will be preserved and protected.

This is a GOOD project for Goleta and SB.

I'm just glad it finally got moving. After they initially cleared and graded the land over four years ago, the place sat dormant for well over two years.

I didn't know that would be the new location for Deckers, I wish them the best of luck but does them moving mean that there will now be an additional three spaces open on top of all the others?! A quick search found around 30 offices of various sizes looking for renters in Goleta. I'm sure many of you don't care but office work caters more to college graduates leaving all the uneducated without much in the way of work. It's great the city is getting more money, now focus on building an attracting some entertainment to the area...

i agree, kudo's to deckers for staying in goleta/santa barbara... but i also see the other side of the coin... there are so many offices unoccupied in goleta already to be used and occupied that it is a shame that deckers didn't rent one of those first. i realize there is going to be construction jobs by building a new office, but seems to me they could have meet there needs refurbishing an already existing office building which would have spurned new construction jobs and made everyone in goleta happy all around by doing so. but in the end, i'm still happy deckers is staying and employing people in goleta.

What looks better, and empty office building with a "For Lease" sign out front or a huge, fenced-up field of weeds with a "Coming soon...Cabrillo Business Park" sign?

Not one of you people who wish Deckers had chosen an existing building have any idea what you are talking about. Companies like Deckers look at ALL their options first...including renting an existing local building, moving out of town, even moving out of state, before making their final decision. Clearly the list of available buildings in Goleta were either too expensive or not suitable for Deckers' needs.
