Which enterprising local business is going to print t-shirts with a copy of the City's warning notice? I'd buy one!!

Great whites are what people always think they see. Because of media etc. It usually turns out to be a mako shark at worst or a thresher shark. Threshers are not dangerous. Mako sharks can be dangerous and look very similar to a great white, but Not the same. I remember a few years ago when a Brooks phototography underwater group off the channel islands had a serious Great white shark sighting and got a lot of photos.. Two weeks later they all realized from photos, and a nature expert, that is was in fact a mako. Not a great white.

I wish this was happening during the winter swells so people would stay out of the water and I could get more waves. I have surfed shark infested waters like Durban, SA and Northern CA and this is nothing. Fishermen kill 500,000 White sharks a year just for their fins, it actually is good to see the population in our marine environment increasing in order to keep healthy. Really your chances are slim to none of encountering one, enjoy the warm water and the rest of summer without fear.

Oceana recently filed a petition to list the Great White population on the western coast as an endangered species. The sharks around here apparently, are genetically distinct and isolated from other Great Whites. In 2011, there were only a total of 350 Great Whites counted off the west coast.

Why are people surprised that great whites are off our coast? They always have been. The ocean is the WILD people. We used to have bears (remember the ones that are on our flag) in these here wild mountains too but we killed them all. That's right, the CA bear is extinct.

Shall we do that to sharks, too, because some of us can't deal with the fear?

Every year, about 100 people die from shark attacks across the globe.

Every HOUR about 10,000 sharks are killed by people across the globe.

Conservation needs to happen now, before it's too late.

the sharks have only been here about 300 million years longer than people, and if we don't ruin it for them they'll probably be here 300 million years after we're gone too.
