If one runs a light or stop sign they only got themselves to blame if they end up on someones hood and I'm a bicyclist.

It sounds like this is an organized ride so the organizers can be legally pursued if the riders cause accidents or injuries or any other trouble. This is a much different situation than the loosely organized ride the day after fiesta. The fact that the organizers are putting out advance notice that their riders aren't always good citizens makes them liable in the event of any trouble. Hope they have good insurance!

I take it this group has legal permission to run this ride and is taking responsibility.

Oh geez. Edhatters... To the OP: thank you for the notice, thank you for your attitude towards the event, and thank you for recognizing that not every rider is as courteous as you are and trying to keep those "other" guys under control. If more people were like you, fewer people would be as opposed to things like the cruiser ride (or even people biking down local streets). I can be pretty anti-bike when I see people blowing stop lights and flying out in front of cars, but riders like you make me happy & want to see more people out & about on their bicycles. THANK YOU.

Agree with 561. I could go ahead and be a jerk and tell all drivers to make sure they start policing other drivers. We all know how much good that would do....

According to the event website, the event is: "Sponsored by the Channel Islands Bike Club and the Kiwanis Club of Ventura" Email addresses are available on the event website. As an Event Director in Santa Barbara, I encourage everyone to direct concerns and violations to the event staff. This looks to be organized event, so there are legal liabilities the organizers are responsible for, unlike the Fiesta Sunday ride which resulted in chaos, numerous collisions and injuries.

I appreciate the heads up given by the OP. This seems to be a good use of this online community. Interesting to see how many responses mention "legal permission" and "legal liability". Lighten up! The point is, just be careful while driving out on the road. We all know how dangerous you car drivers can be!

Thank you so much for the courteous heads up. What general time frame are we talking? Especially regarding Carpenteria to Goleta and also what is the general route through Santa B to Goleta. Thanks. Have a safe and happy ride!

@604, there are maps available, just search for "Ventura Cool Breeze ride" and click on "Routes and Maps". Looks like they will be traversing Rte 192 and then returning via Turnpike/Las Positas and the waterfront (Cabrillo).

I was in Los Olivos one morning early when there was a runners race. The streets used were closed off to cars, and there were cops at places where cars were allowed to cross the road the runners were using during a break in the stream of runners. I thought it was well-organized and kept cars and runners from interacting. Forewarning of the routes to be taken by the cyclists is an excellent idea. I will avoid those roads on Saturday.

@613: There's probably going to be a steady stream of us throughout the day (I'm on the ride, too). The FB page states 1500 expected, and it's not a mass-start event--people can set out any time between 6:30 and 9:30. My best guess is that the first riders will start reaching the 192 around 8:30 - 9:30. After that, it's going to be pretty busy in the area, especially between Manning Park and Goleta, until about 3. Cathedral Oaks in Goleta's going to start getting busy probably 10:30 - 11 ish. I'll be doing my best to be a responsible road user. Hope the rest of us do the same. Oh, and to any other riders reading this, remember that sound carries very well through the Mountain Dr. area. Apparently, the residents learned quite a bit about us the last time 'round.

I hope the bike riders look out for cars, share the road, and stop at stoplights and signs like they are supposed to. Kind of BS how the cops don't enforce these bikers racing through town breaking laws/infractions when they are in a pack, but jump on all drivers for the most minute thing. Should be equal and fair regardless of what vehicle you are cruising through town with.

Due to heavier than usual traffic (I assume) I've seen many people (cars, bikes, peds) running the reds lately. Just saying--people are fed up with the traffic of all kinds--so every one (bikes, cars, peds) be alert, just because you have the green light doesn't mean it's clear.

Love seeing more bikes in our area! There are always a few bad apples in every bunch, and at lease these are not riding inside a few thousand pounds of metal. Thanks for the heads up - just may have to go for a ride myself to enjoy the comraderie and get some needed exercise.

If you want to see really crazy cyclists who flout the rules of the road with 100% impunity, just spend one day in Isla Vista during the school term! I'm a total supporter of the principle of cycling to get from A to B - using human power and no polluting gasoline gets burned - but so many of the cycling student population are drunk/smashed/unaware and arrogant etc. that they give biking a bad image.

Wow, where to start? I bike 20-30 miles a day. I am super cautious: have blinking red lights fore and aft. Still, I never trust that a car will stop where it should. Yes, sometimes I make a slow, not full stop, where it is safe, and I can see all around. Sometimes I stop at a red light and then go against it when there are no cars in sight. Safety first. Sadly, many drivers are not aware that bikes do, legally, share the road. It works both ways.

Running red lights is safe....? This is, I won't say typical, but many riders feel they are above the law....

Thank you for the noise reminder 634. I can't tell you how many personal and private matters are discussed by shouting at 6am on a Sunday morning on a bike. Everything from colon exams to a cyclist cheating with another cyclists wife.

Driving in Goleta today it was exactly as I suspected. Cyclists blowing red lights and stop signs riding 3 side by side in traffic lanes, cyclists riding ON the bike lane line. Dude if you are on the line your butt is in traffic and your clown suit is not going to protect you. Notela could have made a FORTUNE in fines just getting all the scofflaws in the intersection of Calle Real and Turnpike.

Saw many of them on Hollister Ave, Turnpike and Cathedral Oaks. With each encounter I observed numerous violations of the vehicle code. Running stop signs and red lights. Failing to use or remain in the bike lane and failure to signal. Riding several abreast of each other impacting vehicle traffic forcing cars to brake sharply, swerve around them and having to slow down to 5 miles an hour backing up several cars. Riding their bicycles in cross-walks and even speeding. Always glad to accomodate those bicyclists who are the first to let you know they are healthier than you are and are "saving the planet" from all you horrible poluting vehicle drivers.
