How did you get those little guys to pose like that? I can't even get a picture of my kids that good!

Same here, things growing so well this year. I've had late blight on tomatoes the past three years--this year, not a hint of it. Eggplant and peppers already producing plenty. Only problem--gophers! The perennial scourge. Luckily they don't seem to like the nightshades. But others things suffer. Eternal vigilance....

9588... same as posing anyone else. Just got to talk to your subject, create a rapport and make sure you catch their best side. But be sure to get signed consent waivers or model releases before you publish to the web.

OP here. Thanks for the comments.

The camera, since someone asked, is a 2004 (I think) Canon PoweShot Pro. Big heavy point and shoot. It has a feature they called SuperMacro which they don't seem to make as well anymore.

The gophers are kept out of the raised beds with multple layers of chicken wire underneath. Works well for several years before you have to re-dig and rebuild. Worth the trouble.

More pics coming. Bee hives and chickens and stuff.

Lucky you! My prime tomato plant just got invaded by something we've never had before and is dead, with fruit on the vineas they say. Enjoy yours! Thanks for the pics!

We also are having good year, especially bell peppers...they're the size of cantaloupes. We eat what we can and can what we can't. So far, 135qts.

to 588: I sing to them. Also, sometimes I spray water on the garden about 15 minutes ahead of picture time. Predator bugs come in from all around.

Great pictures! To the best of my abilities, this is what I've ID'd them as (top shots of #3-4 would clarify much more for me).
1. Honeybee
2. A butterfly commonly referred to as a Skipper, family Hesperiidae.
3. A leaf bug possibly of the family Miridae
4. Nymph of the family Pentotomidae, possibly the "Harlequin bug" that annoys brassica growers all over CA
5. (Lovely raised beds, gotta do that myself one of these years)
6. A nymph of a variety of Katydid. Pretty little younglings, green adults. Family Tettigoniidae.
7. Hoverfly, family Syrphidae. Larvae are helpful predators or eat decaying vegetation, adults pollinate. Lovely to see hovering around, a sign of a healthy garden ecosystem.

Thanks for sharing the pictures, keep gardening!

Beachcomber, next time you dig to replace wire, use 1/2 mesh hardware cloth. Def worth the money, it is heavily zinc coated and is still going strong in our 20 yr old beds.

Thanks to the heat spell we had in July, I now have ripe large heirlooms, the first in about 10 years. (Stupice is my go-to tomato, but smaller in size). Had to spray my cukes and zukes for mildew (baking soda) but that is all this year. So far.

zinnias, cosmos and other "daisy" formed flowers (composites) as well as dill, cilantro and fennel are heavy nectar producers. Plant em everywhere throughout your veg garden for health.

The cute guy with the long striped legs is a katydid nymph, according to the pix at www.pbase.com.
