Love your images, wish I had one in my collection. However, Whale Tail shots have become so cliche nowadays.

Love your last one with the mist from the whales' spout and the kayaker in the background watching the tails disappear. THAT's story telling. Were these shot with your D800? The detail along the single tail is superb.

I've done a few kayak and whale watching trips to Tofino (just north of there) and it's the best whale watching anywhere. July and August are about the only months it's not pouring though.

Do you also have a D800 - I wonder what the differences are between the D800 and the D7000?

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing! I love the San Juan Islands and Vancouver Island. I actually love the whole area up there. It took us two trips, two summers in a row, to finally see the Orcas. We were fortunate enough to see J, K and L pods all together! The trailing male had a dorsal fin that had to be 6 feet high! Amazing!!!! Your pictures almost make me ache to go back right now!

Great shots Susan. Can't wait to see more. I love that area and those darn Orcas were elusive with us too!

I was up there in May 2007, got lucky it was dry most of the time. The rhododendrons were out--beautiful. But I must say it is not very close to here--about 1400 miles on the interstate, and you need a passport, too ! I took the coast route and that's five days, minimum, each way.

We saw pods J and K last year on a boat out of Anacortes. Naturalist aboard identified every orca with photographs in an album. It was a great trip.

Thanks all for the positive comments!...to answer a few of the Q's.... Yes, I do own a new D800 and the main difference is in the amount of megapixels. The D800 has a whopping 36...the most of any camera...yet! You can crop down an image to an eyeball and it will still be sharp and not noisy at all. This Nikon is making some Canon shooters switch teams!! No auto settings, so I'm committed now to learning how to take good shots on manual setting! D800 is a lot more $$ of course, but the D7000 is a heck of camera and you can pick one up now at Costco for a good price. We drove to BC and back, put on 3,260 miles! Took us two weeks, and yes, you need a passport.

Thanks! It sounds from Ken Rockwell and this that the D7000 is practically trash compared with the D800 which is the now camera to have. link
