926, if you would like to work with racoons, opossums, skunks, squirrels or baby birds, volunteer at ART or Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network! We are ALWAYS looking for people to help with these little critters. Beware...the babies will steal your heart.

Great photos. Good to let people know that volunteers for Wildlife Care and ART are always welcome.

Please don't feed the wildlife! A woman down the street from me feeds all animals, and I just know some of these animals are being trapped and euthanized by people hiring pest control companies (Don't leave out your pets' food either.)

A lot of people are really ignorant about wildlife and afraid when they see these animals in their yards. I have heard so many silly stories of raccoons attacking dogs and cats. Or opossums that are mean and nasty. Urban myths. You don't bother them, and they won't bother you. Don't let your dogs chase wildlife.

Raccoons and opossums and skunks are all just trying to make a living. We need to leave them alone and let them go about their business. This also means not giving them handouts! Love the wildlife, and leave them be.

I don't give the opossums handouts but they decimate my vegetable garden every night, digging and eating the tomatoes. I am trying to figure a way of trapping them and relocating.

094, It's not a silly myth racoons attack dogs. I saw one attack my little dog when we were out walking about 11pm. My neighbor had one attack his little dog, right in front of him. One came after my chickens 8 months ago at 3am, pulled feathers out of a hen, she screamed bloody murder (woke us) and has been so traumatized ever since she hasn't laid even one egg. I lock them up now; I'd had chickens for 13 yrs and never a problem so didn't properly protect them. Racoons are darling, I love their little faces. Yes, we need to live with them, just protect our animals.

Sounds like the work of a Raccoon. There are many measures you can take to disuade wildlife from visiting your yard. Visit our website for more info. under education, is a printable brochure, for dealing with nusience wildlife made possible by WILDEs group of Santa Barbara. Yes, raccoons will and have attacked small dogs, as well as fowl. For chicken and duck owners, please build your enclosures predator proof. You are simply inviting predatory wildlife onto your properties with your pet chickens. Safe enclosure brochures can also be found on our website. www.animalrescueteam.net

Thanks, AnimalListner. Maybe it's raccoons in the garden, digging in the pots, climbing the tomato plants, but we've seen possoms --- and have not recently seen raccoons. I'll check your site. Thanks!

A raccoon pulled my cockatiels through the cage of their outside aviary. They will chase our cats away from their food dishes as well so they can eat the food. The ones I have around my house seem fearless. We try to shoo them away and they will growl and actually chase us.
