I feel sorry for anyone trying to run a small business in today's economic climate. I can imagine the owners watching their savings fly out the door, hoping things will turn around before they have to admit their failure to the world and even worse, to the employees depending on them for their livelihood. I have to admire anyone who has a small business and kept it running over these past few years. I'm going to go spend some money at a small business right now!

Thanks @611....I am part of a fourth generation local small business. It is very scary not knowing what will be in the next 6 months. I only wish more people thought like you and spent their money locally but most of all I wish our own city counsel would support local business instead of hiring “out of towners” for all city projects. Keep our tax dollars local instead of supporting Ventura and beyond.

Heard that Conmed Linvatec out in Goleta is also closing shop. They designed endoscopic surgical cameras. Something like 30 good paying jobs gone. Wish the best for all those who've lost their jobs.

Conmed is in fact leaving the area. My ex husband worked for them and now has found employment with another similar company this past month. Allergan left the area too several years ago and is solely based in Irvine now.

I disagree completely. City should consider all factors when hiring contractors. I don't want my tax dollars spent on more expensive, but otherwise the same service just because they are local.

Supporting local businesses - This is why our family fills our prescriptions at L.M. Caldwell - they also advertise in local venues that help keep locals employed.

The moral of the story: use those xmas gift spa gift certificates as soon as possible. Once the place goes belly up, you're out of luck.

I completely agree with buy local - especially for government work - even if it is more expensive. There are costs associated with buying outside - and that cost is lost business tax revenue and lost wages - wages which are spent locally. To only view cost as a singular item, as @655 might be suggesting, is myopic.

@648 Allergan hasn't left Santa Barbara/Goleta at all! I work for them and we're in two large buildings at 71 S. Los Carneros. Yes, their HQ is in Irvine, but they've grown quite a bit in the past 5 years here. Knock on wood.....never say never......but we're here.

It is sad that the owners could not see the writing on the wall and give the employees some notice and pay.

Well that is too bad for those that were not taken care of before they went under. At least there are a handful of spa's close by. I hear Le Reve is great

Thank you to everyone who supports local business. As a small business owner, I have seen so much business go to our large chain competitor knowing that we provide more personalized service, and knowing that we cannot maintain forever.

Spas are the first thing to swirl the drain in a down economy. Facial cleanser sales at Rite Aid are up though.

Wow, that sucks .... My husband and kids gave me a great gift certificate from there that I was really looking forward to using. So they just get to kepp the $250.00? Doesn't seem right ...

That perticular "small business" was fuded by alimony from a rock star. Also, to all of you who cry "support local business": I hope you don't have a Costco card, or have ever shopped at Borders, mervyns, Nordstom, Macys,in n out, and the list goes on.

I'm sorry to have seen this happen. It appears to be gross mismanagement. I have had my hair cut there for several years and was actually able to see my stylist last week in the chair she has always had at Avia Salon (now called Carlyle.) They had not been paid and the owners stripped the salon of product and supplied. The folks employed there are the ones who got "screwed" by people that have no business running one.

Well the president told us recently that if a business like this had been successful it would have been because of others and the government not their own efforts. Does that mean when they became unsuccessful and had to close down it was also because of the government and others?

Yeah I was thing this might happen. I've been a customer for years and at my last visit my immediate thought was "this business is not long of this earth.". The facialist was the receptionist. The bathroom which had always been stocked with a wide range of amazing products and every bath accoutrement you could need had devolved into some combs in Barbicide. Very tragic for the employees it seems.
