@519 Suicide is not a crime so this call really has nothing to do with guns and crime.

541 Yeah guns are involved.
Suicide may not always break laws but many times they do. Guns fired in residential zones. Trespassing and jumping... Letting cops shoot you..(suicide by cop). It's a crime of humanity that he murdered himself in front of his girlfriend just to traumatized her.

47% of Americans say they have a gun in the home or on their property (poll 2011); in 2009, the latest number: there were 31,400 firearm deaths (and 34,500 motor vehicle deaths.) Motor vehicle deaths have dropped to 32,000; firearm deaths have probably risen.

We spend a lot of money to bring down the motor vehicle deaths, but firearms are a loaded, pun intended, issue and politically-charged, so no money is spent on it out of fear of the gun lobby. We're 12th highest, just below Mexico and above the Phillipines (old figures - we're probably higher, although the rate in Mexico has risen.) With so many guns in so many hands, it's not surprising that people will kill, themselves or others. That choice is part of what we as a society call "freedom".

Appears that this person thought it would be great to traumatize someone while they killed themselves. Guns don't kill people, people kill people... what upsets me is hearing about the little kids that get a hold of their police officer parent's handgun and they kill themselves, seems that has happened with an increasing frequency.

606p....

Of the deaths attributed to firearms.... Almost 50% were suicide.

638, as this example posted here. We spend millions on the Cold Spring Bridge to deter/prevent a few suicides; what is spent on deterrence of suicide by gun? Probably $0. The best way probably would be to severely tighten the restrictions on obtaining and owning a firearm.

I am pretty anti gun, but know that telling someone they can't have it won't stop it.

That being said, I'd say this probably applies more to cases of murder and theft than suicide. I could see a perp going out of his/her way to obtain firearms to rob a bank or a mass killing, but I don't see a fringe suicidal person going out of his/her way to get a firearm to commit suicide. It may happen, but it just doesn't seem as likely. If one wasn't readily available, I'd assume they resort to another means.

Unfortunately, the problem with guns is that they even exist. If you were to eliminate every single one in the world, someone is going to make one.

This poor woman will never get over it. A selfish thing to do on his part.

For every successful suicide there are probably hundreds if not thousands of attempted/contemplated suicides. Having a gun in the house makes it that much easier to go from contemplated to successful.

The question I have is...is that necessarily a BAD thing? Sure, friends/family get upset. But the person's pain is ended and the world's population is decreased. So it's not all bad.

True gun control is "never having to say you missed." Use mace first, they will flea, or if not it allows a person a few seconds to get the firearm. I've never seen a sign stating "gun free home." Really peculiar how anti-gun people hide behind the neighbors who own them.

It was a suicide they don't make the news..The only reason I posted it was that numerous reporting parties heard a scream and a shot. I wanted to relieve their aniexty.

699 I totally agree. I am a firearms collector and see the problems associated with allowing firearms ownership. However, I would be in total support of an outright ban on firearms manufacture or ownership for anyone; military, police, museum, collectors, etc. If they were banned completely from earth, gun control might be effective, but it still wouldn't stop crime or suicide.

682 I would happily put a sign up stating "gun free home" just to see who drops in for a face full of bear spray, but then it would be considered a trap and the person breaking in may have more rights than I do.
