Watching the Olympics is like watching PE class.

i also love the olympics but nbc has ruined my viewing experience. the prime time broadcasts look more like lifetime movies than sport. i watched an hour of their prime time broadcast the other night and only saw 13 points of beach volleyball. the online broadcast of events cuts to advertisements every 3 minutes regardless of what the competitors are doing, interrupting key moments of competition. why can't the amazing accomplishments of the athletes in the games speak for themselves? it's so unnecessary to turn sport into a soap opera, they're plenty exciting without the melodramatic edits.

I'm with you. I don't understand people who don't understand why the Olympics is so wonderful. I even have a friend who was a US foreign service professional, who didn't get it! (Then again, he' a sloth.) Sports and the individual achievement and comradery they foster between different peoples is one of the ways towards peace and greater understanding. I think the Olympics has done more for individual motivation, collaboration between differing peoples and groups, and the understanding that helps to avoid conflict than most of our diplomatic efforts ever could.

I hate TV. I don't watch an hour a week. It's been this way for about 10 years. Well, I love watching the Olympics. I wish they would start at 6 p.m. but I am finding things to do until 8 p.m. when night coverage starts. I know the results and I still watch it. If major networks want viewers like me, offer something of interest. I don't want fake boobs; I want women track stars, and volleyball players, and big shouldered swimmers. I want men who swim, and dive, and run, and jump. They don't need to be pretty or handsome. They just need to be competitive. I too dread Sunday when it is all over. Thank you athletes of the world for providing such interesting and basically wholesome competition. It certainly beats American politics, reality crap, and over hyped Monday night football.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I love the olympics, too! Your comments on emotions are insightful. There's an interesting combination of national pride and global cooperation. I also like the really positive spin on the commercials during the olympics season. Promoting effort, personal best, overcoming challenges... good stuff.

the nbc webcast cut 90 seconds out of the last 3 and a half minutes of the gold medal basketball game for advertisements today. missed the 3 pointer by lebron after his layup to cement the win. thanks for nothing nbc, let's hope abc and espn or (dare i even say this) fox sports picks up the broadcast next year. i've seen enough soap operafication and advertising this summer olympics to last a lifetime!

I too love the feel-good aspect of the Olympics. I don't really care who wins, I just hope the best prevail. I have to admit that I also feel like a sloth, spending every evening in front of the TV, letting it run on "mute" during the daytime so I can catch something interesting that NBC deigns to present without any time slot (e.g., rhythmic gymnastics). I criticize NBC for too many commercials (although some are very good), but I like the announcers very much.

I agree that the Olympics are the only events worth watching on TV. Otherwise my TV has been off. But here in Baja,, I do not get good reception, so I had to rely on the internet. I have never been a pro sports fan,but always loved surfing contests and the Olympics. I am so proud of both our US and Mexican athletes. But I am also proud of ALL the participants who qualified to compete. as they all worked hard to represent their countries. I can say that the whole country of Mexico was celebrating the Gold of the soccer team.
