I'm sure this is the straw that will break the camel's back... No doubt, his fellow officers have seen unusual behavior prior to this bust-Fired...

Pshht, you actually think this is an aberration? I actually personally knew two (married) detectives who were ecstasy addicts. Cops are the pinnacle of dual personalities. The one you see, and the one they mostly are at the bar!

Santa Maria has been a MESS the past few years and it seems like it just keeps going down hill. Who & what's going to turn this alarming trend around? It's pretty much already "Gang Town USA" here on the central coast. They rival the bros in the LA hoods for weapons, fights, gun shot wounds, etc. Whew!

I had a good friend many years ago who was a cop him and his partner cleaned out the evidence locker. They took some pills they didn't know what they were. 3 Days after taking the pills he came to driving 90 mph through an orchard in his patrol car. He used to steal flowers from the cementary and take the flowers home for his wife. He would always leave a note for her that always said the same thing. Darling: I wish you were an 1144 Love, John 1144 is California penal code for a dead body, she didn't know that. That always cracked me up Anyway he and his partner were forced to quit. The Cheif of police I think was fired back in the 80's in a small town up in North S.B. County..

Cops have been doing drugs for a long time (not all of them obviously). They are people, whatever people do they may do also. There are many cases of cops arresting other cops for DUI as well. I think that recently more light has been shined on these facts and those who were unaware or shielded from the truth are now forced to take notice. If you are one of those people don't be to shocked because it is not a new trend or a sign of the times, merely an ongoing unpreventable problem.

Cops and Nurses have a significantly high (no pun) rate of alcohol and drug abuse.

Amazing how some of these commentators were able to conclude that because he was arrested he must have been guilty of violating the vehicle code by driving under the influence. They have managed to rule out any number of other rational possibilities for example, medications taken before going to sleep which may still be affecting the system upon rising. Medical conditions, not the least of which is being extremely tired (its called falling asleep at the wheel). There are a number of illnesses and over the counter medications that are not illegal and from which one might suffer an unexpected reaction. (it has happened to me). So even though it makes for great sensational media attention and a great opportunity to attack a law enforcement officer, before this officer is convicted by accurate facts, I would suggest not rushing to judgment as many here have obviously already done!

218 - Is it really that amazing? The headline for the article is "Santa Maria CHP officer arrested for DUI". There are no comments here that rule out the things you mentioned. Driving under the influence of "over the counter" drugs (sleeping pills included) can be illegal too, and would be classified as DUI.
