459, no this is different. I was there today and it's really odd. It doesn't look like natural seepage or anything "norm" for this beach at all. And the smell is overpowering. I hope someone can answer the OP's question, I'm interested in it, too.

The natural seeps can increase and decrease depending what is going on in the subsurface. I was there swimming a couple of years ago and the smell made me sick. I haven't been back, to swim at least.

How can you differentiate between a "natural" seepage of oil and a leak from an old well? As I understand it, Summerland Beach was the site of a great deal of drilling back in the day.

521.... they actually have to pressurize existing wells and use solvents to extract what oil is still down there and accessible.

Maybe someone should google "oil spill 2012 Santa Barbara" or Carpinteria. I believe there was a good sized spill quite recently and the oil is damaging the shorelines. Oil drilling= Oil spills and spillage. Let's not drill further until we know how to clean up and control the leaking, spilling and coagulating mess. Such a shame...even the sea shells along the shore are coated in black goop...deadly stuff.

We walk this beach all the time and indeed yesterday was the worst oil residue we have encountered to date. We assumed the seepage peaked from earthquake activity. We have not heard, read or found (on any search engine) any reference to a recent oil drill spill in area. There is natural seepage in the Santa Barbara Channel. The whole beach had a petroleum smell and the water had an oil slick. From our experience, this will pass in a week or more.

There was an oil spill near the Pacific Operators rig off Carpinteria according to KEYT on June 22.

Summerland had the first offshore oil rigs in the world, lots of them. Not all were well capped off.
