Sounds like a real waste of money. Only the last 10 steps or so need fixing. What about thousand steps? That place is a slip and fall lawsuit ticking time bomb!

It was great when there were no stairs at all. Just a well-worn path, and a 6-foot drop at the bottom. Used to use our boards as support to swing down to the sand.

417 they only got the money because they were applying for a very specific project. Otherwise the money would not exist (at the City, at least)

Sad to say thousand steps will require many times the $ to repair, atleast this is a step forward (ok some steps forward) during tough financial times.

Unfriggin' believable! A quarter of million dollars is part of the problem. The other is that........TWO AND HALF MONTHS to do the project? That last bit of eroded concrete could be repaired in an afternoon for a few hundred dollars. The few wood steps are fine! Hell, I could fix it with a few bags of concrete and a wheelbarrow! What a waste of time and money! Typical SB/California waste.

We use and enjoy both approaches to the beach.... but I must agree that comparing the two: Thousand Steps would be the more logical set of steps to repair. Would be nice if someone connected to the project would step out of the proverbial box and use some common sense - repair only the section of Mesa Lane that needs work and use the rest to begin a fund for the more dangerous, slippery Thousand Steps.

It does seem like a large sum of money to do this project. It probably has to do with the amount of regulations that they have to comply with to do the work. That's the cost of our over-regulated society. As a regular user of these steps, I'm happy they are maintaining them, and of course sad to hear how long they will be closed. Hopefully the new design is also graffiti and vandal resistant, as that is a continuing cost for these steps. Now talk about a waste of money....

RE 427 and 459. Yes to both and also the alternate path Wet winters made it even more interesting. Agree that only the cement needs work, the rest is fine. 1000 steps has always been slimy and seems to be a greater problem in need of a solution I am guessing that it is a natural seepage issue. It will be interesting to see how they are going to make the stainless steel steps slip proof over time and what maintainence will be required.

Agreed to all who would rather the cement steps were the only thing fixed, with focus and funding going to Thousand Steps (can't count the amount of times I've bruised my tailbone slipping on that stairway). The wooden steps are still in good condition, and adventuring dogs can get back up onto the steps if they chase ground squirrels off the stairs. I enjoy the fact that it's a long stairwell now, with 3 places to stop and enjoy the view, 50 ft footprint seems like there wont be any landings to rest on and it will be steeper. (Will that make it more or less than the current 248 steps?) Also: Where/when was the community input for this decision? Do the Mesa/SB community members have no choice but to submit our favorite beach access to this?

#771 I agree. These questions need to be asked: 'Where/when was the community input for this decision? 'Do the Mesa/SB community members have no choice but to submit our favorite beach access to this?' Will the '3 places to stop and enjoy the view' be removed?

perfect, they wait until the west swells return and close beach access. we've got an el nino headed our way that will likely delay progress throughout the winter.

@483 If you can fix it for cheap, go for it.. the construction process is up for public bidding.. if your work is quality and you can do it cheap, submit a bid and show everyone how its done!!!
