Smart ones do!! Love the pics. That's quite a belt buckle for that little cowboy. He'll grow into it.

The Independent last Thursday, p. 15, had an article written by the president of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association titled "Antiquated Blood Sport." It describes rodeo violence including spinal injuries to the animals, leather groin straps to cause bucking, kicking, prodding, etc. She states that it is not uncommon for animals to be severely injured or killed. The letter states that this association represents 5000 veterinary professionals in opposition to rodeo.

Thanks for the pictures. I was there Friday night and had wondered what the little Mutton Busting winner had received. A very cool belt buckle it appears.

Wonderful photos! Thanks for posting. Being originally from Texas, I have never seen cowboys wear helmets. The last time I was in Texas for a rodeo was over 20-years ago. They probably do wear helmets now. I am sure if I was crazy enough to get on a bull I would want all the protection I could get. BTW, that ain't happenin' podner <:+)

Hey yeah, let's show our kids how to treat scared baby calves and frightened, pissed off, mistreated animals. Fun for the whole family! I wonder when we as humans are going to grow up and see how stupid we've been in our treatment of each other as well as other types of life. And before you go off and brand me as a crazy, granola munching, animal-rights activist I'll have you know I have family members that were actively involved in rodeos for years so I've seen the stupidity up close. They have as well and woken up. Let's not also forget the human toll, broken bones, internal injuries, etc.. A lot of these "tough" cowboys also turn to alcoholism for all of their aches and pains. I don't see the fun in this at all.

I'm sure all of the anti-rodeo people here are vegans, right? and don't use animal products, leather, vitamin capsules (made with hooves), etc. Because if you want to see real MASS cruelty to animals, look primarily at the beef industry. If cows could talk, I bet they would rather be rodeo animals than slaughtered.

423: Although I agree with your sentiment about the beef industry, your logic is flawed. Consuming an animal for your sustinence is not the problem, it is the wasteful consumption that is the issue. If more people caught/killed their own food, I'm sure they would have more appreciation for the animal that died to keep them alive. In the case of the rodeo, my parents took me as a kid. Glad I've never gone back, its pretty screwed up how they treat those animals. If cows could talk, I'm sure they would rather be lying in a pasture somewhere, not getting their balls tied off to be ridden around.

Rodeo: A sad commentary on the human race. Finding enjoyment in harming animals....not my idea of family entertainment.

5423.... your stereotyping is off. I'm not a vegan and on occasion I will eat meat. I just don't get pounding on an animal who is only trying to escape a beating. If you find it fun sport to bully and beat livestock it is a testament to your value system.

Born here, too. I will never go to Rodeo. There was video taken at Fiesta Rodeo, few years back. Showed bulls and horses given hot-shot shocks prior to leaving the pen. Man giving the shocks had device in his palm, all sneaky-like. KEYT ran the story. Nothing came of it. Santa Barbarans would vote to ban this atrocity of a rodeo, but Earl Warren is state-owned. City Council does nothing. County Supes don't care. Boycott this out-dated animal torture show. Fake cowboys, real abuse. Better things to do at Fiesta. Please don't teach your kids it's okay to torment and kill animals.

Rodeos are terrible and scaring and abusing animals is NOT family entertainment. I wish rodeos and bullfights would go away! I will never go to the rodeo, I don't care how much of a tradition it is. In fact, all of us who are against the mistreatment of these animals should donate the cost of a rodeo ticket to our local animal shelter... I will do this today. Boycott this out-dated animal torture show indeed!

But watching the teamwork of rider and horse cutting yearlings (no ropes, usually no contact) is fascinating and wonderful.

I went Friday night. Enjoyed the events that involved real skills but turned off by bronco/bull riding - also the "beauty" contest among the boys and girls and the terrified sheep. Think we'll stick to the morning/afternoon events next time; the Friday night crowd was full of people traipsing back and forth to the bar in their "western" outfits.

Beg to differ with the masses here … Nobody’s testicals are tied up. It’s merely a strap around their somewhat sensitive flank (hip) area making them agitated. They’re not in pain and definitely not being tortured. They’re performers. Watch closely and you will notice most of them know when the horn blows after their 8-second performance they know they are done and stop bucking. When they’re not traveling, they work for 8 seconds, maybe two times a day, roughly 6 months of the year. They’re well fed and cared for. The rest of the year they’re out in a pasture somewhere, mackin’ on green grass and resting up. Being rodeo stock is their job and they do it well. Those animals are the rodeo company’s bread and butter. They’re certainly not putting them in any jeopardy and/or mis-treating them. Sure beats going to the slaughterhouse.
