How did the 477 compare to past years? It seemed there were more horses this year than last year.

Good friend of mine went to see this parade for first time ever. She said "NEVER AGAIN!" She thought the horses were all miserably treated, hated seeing foaming at mouth equines, and told us it was horrible to watch horses forced to perform tricks over and over in the heat. And this was on a not-hot summer day. My family and I refuse to watch horses being abused, and stopped going to see this parade back in the 70s.

abused?? I ride in the parade, my horse doesn't love it, but she is happy to be around all the other horses, they vet check every horse and send those back that are not fit or safe to ride- for some horse owners this is a good chance to see the vet, so before you say they are abusing the horses maybe think about the rodeo in town first.........................................

845 - How do you know your horse doesn't love it? Maybe she does. Perhaps she is like an obstinate child who doesn't want to go on a family vacation and wouldn't be caught dead admitting she had a good time. Please ask your horse again.

You all sound like a bunch of sour-puss sore losers!!! Just because you didn't guess correctly, you gotta come here and complain about other stuff now. I say congratulations to the winner of the horse counting contest. I didn't win either, but I'm not complaining....

Oh, the irony! I had fully intended to reprise my appearance IN the Fiesta Parade as a nun riding on my mule. But I got in a mule wreck 3 weeks ago and am healing up and could not appear. I must wait until next year…el año próximo a una monja en una mula ….. And wear my EdHat t-shirt meanwhile! Thanks!

My horse was a sweater -- meaning she sweat a lot, even when not mentally or physically stressed. She was an Appaloosa with a quarter horse dam and built like a brick house (approx. 1100 lb. mare, 15.3 hands). Had a crest that would rival any stud; looked her best with her mane roached (shaved). But she sweat. A lot. Cooler blankets & walking out take care of that. And some horses foam at the mouth. Some do so due to copper in the bit; it's an aid, an advantage to use copper, it's good for them to keep a bitted mouth moist. And some stick their tongues out. Be educated before you criticize. And never a slip during or soreness after parades. She was normally shod and regularly trimmed.

My guess was way low: 404. Pat's lucky 7's are sure working! But I think it was Palminteri or someone on KEYT who said something about 900 horses. LOL! KEYT strikes again!

Contest post: "However, there is a big difference between a horse, mule and donkey. Did you factor that in to your horse counting? The Edhat Staff certainly did." I still find the above statement vague. I guess you only counted horses. This really should have been specified. There are a lot of mules in the parade. Good thing you counted draft horses. Yes, I'm the one who asked if all 4-legged, hoofed, herbivorous animals were counted. I never got a response. And I'm not whining; I don't give a darn about not winning a guessing contest!

Poster #845. The parade is only as wonderful as there are good and responsible horse owners and handlers. Fortunately for the Fiesta Parade, almost all of the participants fall into this category. It is against parade rules for people to leave a horse unattended during the parade, yet two people did so with bad consequences when they decided their horse could not participate for whatever reason. One horse left all alone tied to a trailer at SBCC parking lot beat herself up pretty badly, frieking out at being left alone. Can't blame the mare—they are herd animals. Another left alone in a trailer at Leadbetter parking lot thrashed and kicked out the solid metal trailer door. NEVER LEAVE A HORSE ALONE!

I am shocked anyone thinks the parade horses are abused. Where does that come from?? Foam on the mouth is not unusual, as someone explained, copper on the bit to keep the mouth moist will result in foam on some horses (not many), better than "dry mouth". "Forced" to perform is abuse?? Many are professional performance horses, it's what they are trained to do. Actually, horses are too valuable (expensive) to abuse, well cared for. Horse owners are horse lovers or they wouldn't bother.

It's all about being in shape. When a horse is in a pen all day and not exercised regularly, then of course it's going to sweat profusely when broght to a 2 hour parade. It's no different than any person being a couch potato then getting up one day to run 5 miles. Yeah, you're going to sweat and it's going to hurt and you're going to get sore. It's doubtful that even 70% of the participants regularly exercise their horses and train them to be ready for an event like this. No different than needing to train for a triathlon.

Weekend warriors who rarely take their horses out and then bam. Run them to hard in a parade that's pretty long. It's all about what's obvious and when a horse is dripping sweat and foaming at the mouth while some jumbo, oversized man is riding him who's grossly out of shape, it's cruel, period. Get in shape. Get your horse in shape. And then enter into the parade.
