Now, if we could only get other folks like, say, Barack and Michelle Obama to also pay their fair share of taxes, we'd be able to balance the budget. My family members paid 35%. The Obamas paid 13%. They paid virtually no Social Security tax. Not a very good example to set for the rest of us.

Maldanado is putting out facts that blow Capps current cover story. Why was Capps renting an illegal second unit in the first place. If shown to be the case, that would be a two-fur: intentionally renting illegally; and intentionally covering her tracks not reporting the illegal income. Should one also investigate if Capps is paying her gardeners properly too?

This story has been spun by the Orwellian rightwing media as an "ethics violation". If discovering that a tax bill has been unpaid, and you pay voluntarily it without involvement by the IRS, that sounds more like "an example of ethics", not a "violation". People do make mistakes, and the evidence suggests that the Capps issue is an unintentional error which was corrected as soon as it was discovered. Mitt Romney, on the other hand, is concealing many of his tax returns. I wonder why?

630: Get your facts straight. Romney only paid 13% and yes he should reveal his taxes. The Obamas paid 20.5% and their tax returns are publicly available. And nobody pays Social Security on income over $110.1k.

The Maldanado family farm (not Abel Maldanado) tax dispute is working its way through the tax courts. Just the way the law allows. Just like the law that allows Capps to pay her undisputed back rental income taxes. However, Capps renting an illegal second unit in a single family neighborhood as an intentional zoning violation is still under investigation.

re: the Obamas. They paid an income tax rate of 20.5% in 2011. As for the Romneys, we don't know, but in 2010 they paid 14.5%. even though had higher income than the Obamas. And now it seems the Romneys will fight to not release anymore tax returns.

Don't blame Romney for not releasing more tax returns because there are far more critical issues for voters to consider. Romney has a clean record for ethics, honesty and results. He and the nation does not need side-issue exploitation which is all the Democrats have. Capps accountant told her to pay her additional taxes in 2006, but then she would have to admit to an illegal rental unit so she did not. Capps is guilty of an act of commission, while the the Democrats try to make an issue Romney's act of omission. That is all I need to know about these current games the Democrats are playing. Pick your battles where they should be fought, not where the other side wants to take you. The nation has gotten past political gotcha games. Grow up, Democrats. The nanny-state has not been good to you either.

If Romney has a clean record, then he should not have any problems releasing as many taxes as his father did. He won't because he has huge problems that were not mistakes and are being covered up. Capps' problem is out in the open, not covered up, and fixed. People make mistakes - one can judge character is they are open and fixed (Capps) or closed and not fixed (Romney). Oh and by the way, check the record of the Democrats versus the Republicans. The Republicans are always the bigger spenders, and leave the country in worse shape.

The right wing attack is dishonest, as always ... false claims about the Obamas and about Lois Capps, who paid the taxes as soon as she became aware of the mistake.

Let's say Romney had legal balancing interests that allowed him sufficient deductions to pay no taxes, just picture the hoots and howls this perfectly legal scenario would bring. On the other hand. let's say he made millions more than other people in this down economy, same reaction. Hoots and howls. He has a no-win situation either way. Yes, just like the hoots and howls over Obama's birth certificate and refusal to release college transcripts, voting records or the real author of his faked autobiographies. Stonewalling worked for Obama. These are the serious issues we face. There has never been a more important choice and you should have made it already. Less government or more government. That is what is really at stake this election. Uncommitted independents know what's up with this. So keep firing away if this is all the Dems have to run with this time in 2012. It is an independent voter turn-off.

Facts: ---- Capps CPA in public documents stated in 1996 these taxes needed to be paid. ---- Capps finally paid them in 2012. ---- Do the math. ---- Define: "took care of it right away as soon as she found out."

659: Where are you getting the "facts" that the rental was illegal or that the CPA stated in 1996 that taxes (from income in 2001 -2005) needed to be paid? seems you're either privvy to a lot of informstion nobody else has uncovered, or you're simply fabricating stories to bolster your weak argument.

Uh, hello? She rented out a room in her house. If that is illegal then 1/2 of SB should be in jail. It must really irritate the Republican'ts that Lois is so popular, and they have to grasp at straws to try to attack her. Really Lois' accountant should come out and take the blame but Lois is too nice to make him/her do that.

Sy - let me edumacate U - One of these people has a business that is fighting the IRS about deductions - the other was getting checks for rent that the accountant flagged years ago - one is basing her campaign on truth and tax's ..while she has a house staff and gardeners that are not local ......and then there is the rental ........HHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMM

I don't know what it means to "edumacate" someone. :) At any rate, I guess I still don't see the big deal. I think there are bigger, more substantive issues to debate rather than back taxes (which weren't even disputed.) For what it's worth I think the Capps campaign making hay about Maldonado's IRS problems is also something of a distraction. But that's how politics works these days; focus on the meaningless, fail to debate the meaningful, and everyone else suffers. You can continue being an intensely negative person (as you've consistently proven yourself to be), I'm going to be focusing on how to actually fix our problems through sensible debate. Which doesn't often happen on the Internet...

And just while it's on my mind, what's the problem with someone running a campaign based on "truth" and "taxes" telling the truth about failing to pay her taxes and then willingly, without fight or fuss, paying said taxes? It seems pretty reasonable to me.
